Titans Still Hoping to Trade Vince Young

Vince YoungThe Tennessee Titans are going to do what they can to trade quarterback Vince Young.

The question is: Can they pull it off?

Young, who the Titans announced earlier this month will not return next season, is due a $4.25 million roster bonus 10 days after the start of the new league year, a clock that will begin ticking when a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) is signed, ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported.

It previously had been thought that Young was due the bonus March 10, which led many to believe the Titans had to deal or cut Young by that date.

Because the bonus is tied to the CBA, it gives the Titans a more flexible window to address the Young situation.

If Young is traded, his new team must assume his contract or be willing to restructure it. Schefter wrote that while the Titans can release Young as of February 7, they have no plans to do so now.

Jeff Fisher and the Titans’ Differences Ran Its Course

Filed under:

Jeff Fisher won the battle. He could not win the war.

His exit from the Tennessee Titans in a news conference on Friday afternoon was a capsule of his 17 years of leadership as the franchise’s head coach. Charming. Determined. Warm. Abrupt. Open. Closed.

He is at peace now, he said.

It is time to move on, he insisted.

It was not such a time less than a month ago when Fisher and his quarterback, Vince Young, were in a one-two punch and jerk with Tennessee owner Bud Adams. Adams was forced to decide between the two men. Which one would stay? Which one would go?

It was Tennessee general manager Mike Reinfeldt and executive vice president Steve Underwood who convinced Adams in a meeting in Houston, where Adams lives, that it was Young who must get the boot.

Fisher won that battle.

But the war was much bigger.

Jeff Fisher at Departure News Conference: ‘I Think I’m Tired, I Need to Rest’

Jeff Fisher didn’t get much into specifics on Friday. Neither did the Tennessee Titans.

But what Fisher did say at a Friday news conference to discuss his departure from the team Thursday after 16 full seasons as the Titans‘ head coach, was that more than anything, the reason for the surprising move was simple.

It was time.

“It is hard for me to stand here and imagine that 17 years later it has come to this,” Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean reported Fisher as saying. “I never imagined doing this as long as I have done it. I owe nothing but gratitude and thanks … for this incredible journey.

“I have been blessed to be associated with one of the best franchises in the National Football League for this long. But as they say, all good things come to an end. I have a great feel of personal peace with this resolution.”

Fisher, who took over as interim coach in 1994, became the full-time coach the following season. He went 142-120 during his tenure, and coached the Titans to the Super Bowl following the 1999 season.

“I think I’m tired,” Fisher said. “I need to rest.”

Wyatt reported that Fisher, General Manager Mike Reinfeldt and Executive Vice President Steve Underwood declined to discuss specifics regarding the move.

“We had some differences,” Underwood said. “And the differences that we had were obvious.”

Owner Bud Adams spoke at the news conference via telephone.

“It’s a very tough day for this franchise,” Adams said. “Jeff meant a great deal to this team and I appreciate all that he has done for us,” Adams said. “Unfortunately, organizations and coaches almost always reach a point where it is time for a change and this is where we are.

“This isn’t personal, and I believe both the team and Jeff will benefit in the long run from this move. I am still confident about our future. I continue to have high hopes about our team.”

Jeff Fisher, Tennessee Titans Surprisingly Decide to Part Ways

Jeff Fisher no longer is coaching the Tennessee Titans.

Fisher, in one of the most surprising moves of the offseason, will part ways with the Titans, according to a statement released by the team early Thursday evening. Fisher has coached the Titans on a permanent basis since 1995.

He was the NFL‘s longest-tenured head coach.

Although there was speculation about Fisher’s job security late in the season, the move comes as a surprise because the Titans and Fisher has appeared ready to move forward with Fisher as the coach since shortly after the season.

According to Fox Sports, Fisher will receive $8 million to leave.

It had been widely speculated and reported since late in the 2010 regular season that either Fisher or quarterback Vince Young would no longer be with the team next season. But when the team announced shortly after the season that Young would not return next season, speculation about Fisher cooled.

Vince Young: ‘I Am a Starting Quarterback, an Elite Quarterback’

Vince Young Vince Youngwants to start in the NFL again. And he said on Wednesday he’s willing to work to do it.

Young, who is expected to be released or traded by the Tennessee Titans by early next month, said Wednesday in an interview with ESPN Wednesday night that he is an “elite quarterback,” and that he wants to compete to show that with his next NFL team.

“I’m going to go into the organization, the team, and compete,” Young said. “That’s all I can do, and let them make their own decision after that. Definitely, I am a starting quarterback, an elite quarterback in the NFL. I want to go ahead and start. But like it always is, the coaches have the last word.”

Young, the No. 3 overall selection in the 2006 NFL Draft, had two extensive stints as the Titans‘ starter, the last of which ended Nov. 21 of this season. That was the day he sustained a thumb injury in an overtime loss to the Washington Redskins.

AFC South: Summing Up the Division’s Defining Moments of 2010

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts‘ loss to the New York Jets this past Saturday leaves the AFC South without a playoff team entering the divisional playoff round.

That’s the first time that has happened in the division’s nine seasons.

So, with the South’s season over unusually early, Fanhouse this week will begin looking ahead and looking back at the division. We won’t look back for long, and will begin soon looking at free agency, and what each team will do in the offseason.

But for today, let’s take a look at the key moments that defined the AFC South in 2010:

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (10-6)

Synopsis: A better season than many will ever believe. The Colts overcame placing 18 players on injured reserve and extended absences from key players to make an NFL record-tying ninth consecutive postseason appearance. The Colts got the most from what was available this season, and were a play away from playing in the divisional playoff round for a seventh time in eight seasons.

Tennessee Titans’ Players Applaud Decision to Retain Jeff Fisher as Coach

To hear Tennessee Titans players say it, retaining Jeff Fisher was a good move.

After a week of relative uncertainty, Titans owner Bud Adams on Friday announced that Fisher would be retained for at least a 17th season as the franchise’s coach.

Titans players reacted positively to the decision.

Titans center Eugene Amano told Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean he “wanted to see him (Fisher) stick around and finish this thing off and take this team to a championship.”

Titans Take a Realistic Look at Future Without Quarterback Vince Young

As Jovan Haye saw it, the events around the Tennessee Titans this week were understandable.

Not pleasant — but certainly not shocking, either.

Haye, a defensive tackle for the Titans was among players who spoke to Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean late in the week about the departure of Vince Young, one of the main faces of the franchise for the past five seasons and the team’s starting quarterback during much of that span.

Titans owner Bud Adams announced in a statement Wednesday Young will not return next season.

And Jovan says the NFL reality is this:

It’s Adams’ team and therefore it’s his decision, too.

“Vince was the franchise quarterback, but Bud Adams is the owner, and himself and the people who work for him make the decisions, that’s the way the NFL works,” Haye said. “What happened to Vince can happen to anybody at the end of the day. No one is untouchable. I have been cut twice and it is not a good feeling. It is a brutal business, but you have to remember owners own, coaches coach, and players play.

Panthers Must Decide Which Way to Turn Now That Andrew Luck’s Gone

Andrew Luck is staying at Stanford to get his degree and enjoy himself. He’ll be the early favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. Luck, by the way, is not going to pass up a $50 million signing bonus because a rookie salary cap will be set up along with the new agreement between players and owners.

So what should we expect from the Carolina Panthers with the first overall pick? Have some fun and throw out scenarios along with me.

You and I are at a safe distance from actually having to make a call on this. The onus is on the ex-sportswriter Marty Hurney, the GM of the Panthers, and his talent scouts.

The Panthers will not trade a first-round pick to the Eagles for Kevin Kolb, but might they trade a pick somewhere down the line for Vince Young?

There is a lot of time to sort through scenarios and find a decent veteran quarterback. The Panthers were so sure Matt Moore was going to be their guy after his fast finish in 2009, did they really look at a lot of options after Jake Delhomme left?

Now that Luck has taken himself out of the picture, Carolina has time to look and see.
