PGA Tour Suspends Rule That Led to Jim Furyk’s Barclays Disqualification

Filed under:

Jim FurykPGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem has suspended the regulation that resulted in Jim Furyk’s disqualification last week from the Barclays after he was late to his pro-am starting time.

For the remainder of the year, a similar situation will be handled as a matter of unbecoming conduct. A player guilty of a similar offense will be required to participate in the remainder of the pro-am round and may be required to perform additional sponsor activity. A player who misses his pro-am obligation in its entirety will still be ruled ineligible for the tournament unless he has been excused in accordance with the provisions of the regulations.

The matter will receive further discussion at the Policy Board meeting in November.

Phil Mickelson made a solid argument why the old rule was a bad one: not all players are required to participate in pro-am competitions.

“The rule itself applies to only half the field,” Mickelson says. “So if you’re going to have a rule that does not apply to everybody, because not everybody played the pro-am, you cannot have it affect the competition.

“It’s got to be a different penalty. It can’t be disqualification if it only applies to half the field. So this rule — it’s not protecting the players. It’s not protecting the sponsors. It applies to only half the field and yet it affects the integrity of the competition.

“I have no idea how the commissioner let this rule go through.”

Matt Kuchar Wins Barclays Over Martin Laird in Dramatic Playoff

Matt KucharPARAMUS, N.J. (AP) — Matt Kuchar‘s fortunes took quite a turn Sunday, and so did his golf ball.

Kuchar beat Martin Laird in a playoff at The Barclays with a shot out of the rough that rolled toward the back of the 18th green, then caught enough of the slope to turn back toward the hole and stop 30 inches away for a birdie.

It was a stunning conclusion to the first FedEx Cup playoff event.

Kuchar closed with a 5-under 66, and it didn’t look as though it would be enough. Laird had a one-shot lead and needed two putts from just inside 25 feet for the victory, when he ran his putt 7 feet past the hole. He missed the par putt, setting up the playoff.

The timing could not have been better for Kuchar.

His first victory of the year came two weeks after he made his first Ryder Cup team, and the win can only give him a shot of confidence. Kuchar moved to No. 1 in the FedEx Cup standings by winning the first playoff event, giving him a good shot at the $10 million prize. And his third career win is likely to move him to a career-best No. 10 in the world ranking.

Tiger Woods continues to make progress, which in this case means he gets to keep going.

Woods, who started these playoffs at No. 112 in the standings, closed with a 4-under 67 to easily make the top 100 who advance to the second round next week at the Deutsche Bank Championship. Woods tied for 12th, his best finish since June, and moved up to No. 65.

Martin Laird Grabs Barclays Lead

Martin LairdPARAMUS, N.J. (AP) — Martin Laird biggest goal at The Barclays was to play well enough to reach the second round of the FedExCup playoffs. Now he can aim a lot higher.

Laird, who started at No. 95 in the standings, ran off four birdies early in his round and kept bogeys off his card Saturday at Ridgewood Country Club for a 6-under 65 to build a three-shot lead over Dustin Johnson and Jason Day.

Laird was at 12-under 201. A victory for the 27-year-old Scot would move him to No. 1, assuring him a spot in all four majors next year.

Tiger Woods also has something at stake Sunday, but it most likely won’t be a trophy. After missing only one fairway in each of the first two rounds, Woods hit his opening tee shot off the property and took triple bogey. He couldn’t get those three shots back and shot 72, putting him nine shots behind. He needs a steady final round just to advance to the second round next week outside Boston.

For Johnson, who has found nothing but hard luck in the majors this year, it will be his second straight tournament playing in the final group. So much for that hangover from the PGA Championship, where he was penalized two shots on the final hole when he didn’t realize he was in a bunker at Whistling Straits, knocking him out of a playoff.

Johnson, struggling with a cold and his swing earlier in the week, began to hit his stride on a sunny day in northern New Jersey. On the 616-yard 13th hole, he blasted a 3-wood to about 15 feet for eagle, and added consecutive birdies a short time later on his way to a 64 that gave him a chance to win.

Tiger Woods’ Barclays Hopes Gone After Triple Bogey

Tiger WoodsPARAMUS, N.J. (AP) — One swing cost Tiger Woods any chance of winning The Barclays.

Now he can only hope get gets to keep playing after Sunday.

Four shots out of the lead to start the third round, Woods hit a shocking 3-wood off the first tee-part pop-up, part duck-hook-that sailed over the trees and off the property at Ridgewood Country Club. It led to a triple bogey, and he never got those three shots back.

Woods finished with back-to-back birdies for a 1-over 72 that put him well behind the leaders.

“In the end, it probably cost me a chance to win the tournament,” said Woods, who rallied to get to 3-under 210. “But I’m pleased how I sucked it up and got it back the rest of the day, when it easily could have gone the other way. Hitting a ball like that, it can derail you. And it didn’t. I got it right back.”

It was hard to believe the swing came from someone who had only missed two fairways over the first 36 holes. Woods attributed it to having too many swing thoughts swirling between the ears.

One Round Doesn’t Mean Tiger’s Back

Filed under:

Tiger WoodsTiger Woods‘ divorce settlement has been super-secret, but part of the settlement was made public Thursday.

Elin didn’t get full custody of his golf ability.

Woods shot a 65 at The Barclays, just three days after his divorce was finalized in Florida. And I know what you’re thinking.

He’s back!

Not so fast, Tiger fans. Your man will be back, but Elin’s ex-man hasn’t suddenly been transformed by a dissolution document. If that’s all it took to succeed, John Daly would have won 30 majors by now.

All Thursday’s round did was confirm that Woods’ massive reservoir of ability is still there. But golf and mental rehab are too complex to declare that Tiger’s been cured of all that’s been ailing him.

We’ve had these false alarms before. Remember the third round at the U.S. Open? He shot a 31 on the back nine, capping it with a bombs-away approach shot on the final hole that had the gallery screaming.

The next day – pffffttt.

Tiger Woods Plays Best Round of Year to Share Barclays Lead

Tiger Woods BarclaysPARAMUS, N.J. (AP) — Yes, that really was Tiger Woods‘ name atop the leaderboard.

In his first tournament since his divorce, Woods finally looked like the No. 1 player in the world Thursday at the Barclays when he opened with a 6-under 65, his lowest score of the year, to share the lead with Vaughn Taylor. It was his first time leading after any round on the PGA Tour since the Tour Championship last September.

“It’s exciting to hit the ball flush again,” Woods said. “It’s something I’ve been missing all year.”

He didn’t miss much at Ridgewood Country Club. Woods hit all but one fairway and putted for birdie on all but two holes. And while he hit his driver only twice, they were two of his best shots of the day — including on the 291-yard fifth hole, where his drive landed pin-high and settled 15 feet away.

Was it just a coincidence that his game showed up so soon after his marriage was dissolved?

“I can’t really say that’s the case,” he said. “As far as golf, it was nice to put it together.”

Woods and Taylor both played in the morning, when the greens were smooth and the conditions were only breezy. They had a one-shot lead over Adam Scott, Brian Gay and Ryan Palmer. Scott played in the afternoon, where a gust of wind played tricks on him at the final hole and led to bogey.

Scott endured a long day in the pro-am Wednesday and didn’t think Ridgewood would serve up a 65 to anyone.

The Barclays Roundtable Preview: We’re Talkin’ About Playoffs

Heath SlocumLast year, Heath Slocum reminded us all what playoffs are about. He was the feel-good story of last year’s FedExCup, not to mention its biggest surprise.

First, he only made the post-season playoff series by the smallest of margins, getting into the 125-player field as No. 124 on the points list.

Then Slocum found himself in a tense final-day battle with some of the biggest names in golf: Tiger Woods, Steve Stricker, Padraig Harrington and Ernie Els.

But Slocum closed with a 4-under 67 to win for the third time in his career and first time in four years. The victory zoomed him up all the way to No. 3 in the FedExCup race and he eventually finished eighth in the final standings.

He made it all happen by holing a 21-foot put for par on the final hole, claiming a one-shot decision over Els, Stricker, Harrington and Woods.

Slocum’s nerve-defying final putt came only a short time after Woods missed from seven feet on the same green, a stroke that cost him dearly.

“It was an incredible day, incredible experience,” Slocum said. “I was just kind of lucky to come out on top. A lot of good players. At the end of the day, that putt on the last was magical. I’ll remember that for the rest of my life.”

Woods probably remembers it also, but for different reason.

It was his first tournament back after losing a two-shot lead Y.E. Yang in the PGA Championship and he let another title get away.

After a clutch 6-iron from 189 yards to seven feet on the final hole to give himself a chance to tie for the lead, the birdie putt did not hit the hole.
