Tracy Rocker Lands Job as Titans’ Defensive Line Coach

The Tennessee Titans have hired Tracy Rocker as defensive line coach.

Rocker, the defensive line coach at Auburn the past two seasons, is replacing Jim Washburn, who left to join the Philadenelphia Eagles in the same position last month.

Former Titans coach Jeff Fisher targeted Rocker as the replacement at the time, Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean reported, adding that Fisher recommended Rocket to new coach Mike Munchak.

“I really like the way Tracy has worked his way up the coaching ladder after being such a successful player,” Munchak said in a statement released by the Titans. “He has shown the ability to develop players at all of his stops, which is a testament to him being a great teacher. He is a rare combination of a great player who becomes a great teacher.

“He has a passion for the game and has shown the ability to relate to his players.”

Mike Mularkey’s Handiwork Gets Tennessee Titans’ Attention

There was an efficiency to the Atlanta Falcons offense all season, and efficiency is the standard in the NFL. Control the ball, limit turnovers, have some balance.

The Atlanta Falcons did all that and people around the NFL have noticed, which is why offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey is in the running for another head coaching job. He will interview with the Tennessee Titans, according to various reports.

Mularkey helped bring together an offense that had splash and power. There was Roddy White catching the ball downfield, Tony Gonzalez catching it over the middle, and Michael Turner running with it.

The Falcons were fifth in the league in scoring offense (25.9 points) and had decent balance between run and pass. They lost only eight fumbles (6th fewest in the NFL), which is a decent stat because they were one of those teams that had the ball a lot: 32:47 per game, second in the NFL.

Ball security is huge and a reflection of coaching. The Falcons also allowed just 23 sacks in the regular season, which is significant because there was cohesion on offense. The line could handle blitzes because Mularkey understood tendencies and when and where the blitz was coming from.

Perry Fewell, Gregg Williams to Interview for Tennessee Titans’ Coaching Position

The Tennessee Titans‘ head coaching search has taken on a decided out-of-house feel.

There’s a lot of Buffalo thrown in, too.

After interviewing two in-house candidates early in the week, the Titans will interview former Buffalo Bills head coach Gregg Williams for the position on Thursday, the Tennessean is reporting. John Glennon and Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean also write that two other former Bills head coaches — Atlanta offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey and New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell – are expected to interview for the position.

Wyatt confirmed all three of the candidacies.

Fewell, the Bills’ interim coach for the last seven games of the 2009 season, spent last season as the New York Giants’ defensive coordinator. He was 3-4 in the position. Williams, who spent 11 seasons with the Titans and Oilers, was the defensive coordinator with the franchise from 1997-2000. He spent three seasons as the Bills’ head coach.

Graves became the fifth Titans coach to be fired or leave the staff since the end of the 2010 regular season, a list that includes last week’s departure of Jeff Fisher, the Titans’ head coach since 1995.

To hear Tennessee Titans players say it, retaining Jeff Fisher was a good move.

After a week of relative uncertainty, Titans owner Bud Adams on Friday announced that Fisher would be retained for at least a 17th season as the franchise’s coach.

Titans players reacted positively to the decision.

Titans center Eugene Amano told Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean he “wanted to see him (Fisher) stick around and finish this thing off and take this team to a championship.”

Jeff Fisher on Future With Titans: ‘I’m Under Contract for Another Year’

The Tennessee Titans turned in a gutty performance in the 2010 regular-season finale, losing to the AFC South champion Indianapolis Colts 23-20.

Immediately, talk turned to the future.

And while around Tennessee this season that means the future of Jeff Fisher, the NFL‘s longest-tenured coach on Sunday declined much public speculation on the issue.

“I’m under contract for another year,” Fisher said after the Titans lost on a 43-yard, last-play field goal by Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri. “We’re going to come back. We’ll have wrap-up physicals tomorrow and we’ll start our evaluation process.”

Pressed on his future, Fisher replied, “I’m under contract. Yeah, I hope that I am (back),” adding, “I don’t really have a comment about it. I’m under contract. I’ve said time and time again I’ll finish my career at Tennessee.”

The Titans, picked by many to push for the AFC South title, did so for the first seven games of the season, starting 5-2 and holding a share of the lead in the South. They then lost eight of nine games as the ongoing discord between Fisher and quarterback Vince Young became the center of attention.
