Shannon Brown Featured in New NBA D-League Campaign

At this year’s NBA D-League Showcase in South Padre Island, all of the players are looking to show the NBA scouts and executives in attendance that they might someday be able to contribute to an NBA championship-winning team down the road.

It’s possible, too.

Two years ago, Shannon Brown was able to do just that on assignment from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers during the 2008 D-League Showcase in Boise, Idaho.

Brown, at the time a seldom-used guard in the Cavs’ rotation, was able to get his confidence back in front of the majority of NBA decision makers on his way to earning All D-League Showcase First Team honors by scoring 26 points in his first game and following that up with 37 in the second before earning his recall back to the NBA.

Ranking the NBA’s Most Improved Player Candidates

Talent is one thing. Work ethic is another.

It’s a creed that is as true in the NBA as anywhere else, and the Most Improved Player award is often the place to find a young player who has applied both key elements in a most admirable way while becoming a far more relevant member of the league.

Unless you’re Bobby Simmons.

Leave it to a Clipper to mess with a good trend. The 2004-05 MIP award winner has fallen completely off the NBA map since he more than doubled his scoring average from one year to the next (7.8 points per game in 2003-04 to 16.4). Yet aside from that aberration, it’s a quality cast of characters that has earned this trophy.

There’s no shortage of worthy candidates in this year’s race, too, including one who has a chance to right the Simmons wrong. Clippers guard Eric Gordon has seen a Simmons-like spike in his already-impressive production, going from 16.9 points per game and 44.9 percent shooting in his second season to 23.8 points per game on 46 percent shooting while proving a worthy running mate to Rookie of the Year leader Blake Griffin.

Charley Rosen’s Close Look: What’s Wrong With Lakers?

OK, the Lakers claimed that the piece of coal that the Heat presented them with on Christmas Day was due to their lack of focus and their failure to approach the game with an appropriate sense of urgency. And after being publicly berated by both Phil Jackson and Kobe Bryant, as well as a feisty practice session, the Lakers collectively swore that their championship chops were fully restored.

How then to explain another lopsided loss, this one in San Antonio?

Notebook: Lakers, Heat Head in Different Directions; Tough Times for Hornets?

Shannon BrownLOS ANGELES — It was the loudest of weeks on the what’s-wrong-with-the-Miami-Heat? beat.

Jarrett Jack barely qualified as a decibel raiser, but the New Orleans guard had quietly pointed out while walking to the team bus at Staples Center on Monday night that role players have always been and will remain an integral part of the championship formula. One day later, a far more relevant voice spoke up in the City of Angels when Lakers coach Phil Jackson opined about Miami coach Erik Spoelstra and the clock that ticks toward the sort of Pat Riley takeover that took place back in December 2005.

But take those headlines away and the latest facts spoke loudly enough on their own about what it takes to build a winner, with the strengths of Jackson’s two-time defending champion/winners of five straight Lakers once again providing a telling contrast to the weaknesses of this 8-7 Heat squad that so many pegged as title contenders. Namely, the Lakers’ dominant bench play (the latest chapter being the unreal emergence of Shannon Brown) and Miami’s loss of one of its few dependable reserves (forward Udonis Haslem and his left foot surgery that could be season-ending).

Steve Blake, Shannon Brown the Opening Night Heroes for the Lakers

LOS ANGELES — Take a quick glance at the box score of the Lakers‘ 112-110 opening night victory over the Rockets, and you’ll see familiar names jump out at you on the stat sheet. Pau Gasol led the team with 29 points and 11 rebounds, and Kobe Bryant followed closely with 27 points of his own, along with five rebounds and seven assists. Yet without the heroics of Steve Blake and Shannon Brown, we’d likely be talking about Bryant’s and Gasol’s efforts coming in a Lakers loss.

“We just didn’t seem to find traction until Shannon and Steve got in the ballgame and changed the contexture of that ballgame,” Phil Jackson said afterward. “It was a great effort by those two. They gave us a big rally.”

Did they ever.

With L.A. trailing by as many as 13 points at the half, and by that same margin with almost the entire third period having been wasted, Blake hit back-to-back three-pointers to end the quarter, giving the Lakers life and pulling them to within just five. Brown hit back-to-back threes of his own to cap a 28-9 Lakers run midway through the fourth, part of a personal 14-point scoring spree that undoubtedly was critical to L.A.’s success down the stretch.

Lakers vs Rockets: Champs Win Opener in Final Seconds

Kobe Bryant and Kevin MartinLOS ANGELES — After opening the evening by receiving their championship rings and raising banner No. 16 to the rafters, the Lakers finished things in exciting fashion, coming from 13 down in the third and then hanging on for a 112-110 victory to open the 2010-11 season.

While Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant led L.A. in scoring with 29 and 27 points apiece, it was the 3-point shooting of Steve Blake and Shannon Brown that really sparked the team, and allowed them to overcome big nights from Kevin Martin and Aaron Brooks, who finished with 26 and 24 points respectively for the Rockets.

FIRST QUARTER: Rockets 33, Lakers 26

The Lakers overcame the emotion of their ring ceremony fairly quickly and settled into some effective basketball with the team’s first unit. But it was the Rockets’ guards who were the story, with Aaron Brooks and Kevin martin combing to score 27 of their team’s 33 in the period.

Pau Gasol had 12 for L.A., and Ron Artest hit a couple of threes to keep the Lakers close, despite the team’s 36.4 percent shooting.

Phil Jackson was asked before the game if he expected his rookies to get any minutes tonight, and he joked, “I hope not.” But he inserted Derrick Caracter into the lineup just over three minutes in, once Lamar Odom was forced to the bench with two personal fouls.

Shannon Brown to Return to the Lakers

Shannon BrownShannon Brown is returning to the Lakers.

Brown’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, told FanHouse on Thursday the deal “definitely” will get done later in the day. The free-agent guard will sign a two-year, $4.6 million contract, with the second year a player option. He will make $2.2 million this season, with the option year worth $2.4 million.

“The lure of the Lakers was too great,” said Bartelstein, whose client had been looked at strongly by New York. “He didn’t want to look back and not have the chance to go for a third straight championship.”

Brown opted out in June of a deal that would have paid him $2.149 million this season. The sides haggled over dollars for several weeks before Brown ending up getting just a slight amount more than what he left behind.

“We’ll have the flexibility and will look at it again next summer,” Bartelstein said.

Brown, who averaged 8.1 points last season, had said all along that he wanted to re-sign with the Lakers.

Pistons, Will Bynum Agree to 3-Year Deal

Will BynumIt’s often the same old tune with restricted free agents. Team officials make their players wait for an offer sheet, not wanting to think they’re bidding against themselves.

But agent Mark Bartelstein said that wasn’t the case with Detroit and his client, point guard Will Bynum, who agreed to a three-year, $10.5 million contract Wednesday.

“Joe (Dumars) was great,” Bartelstein said of the Detroit executive. “A lot of times, teams sit back and wait for an offer sheet when you have a restricted free agent. But he worked with us to get a fair deal. … That was great.”

Bynum last season had averages of 10.0 points and 4.5 assists as a Pistons key reserve. He has three-season NBA averages of 8.1 points and 3.4 assists.

“I’ve very excited about it,” Bartelstein said of his client returning to Detroit. “It’s a great deal for him.”

Celtics to Re-Sign Marquis Daniels

Marquis DanielsThe Boston Celtics have reached an agreement to re-sign swingman Marquis Daniels for $2.5 million on a one-year deal, his agent, Mark Bartelstein, told FanHouse on Thursday.

“It’s a good opportunity for him,” Bartelstein said. “It’s a fresh start for him after the injury.”

Daniels, who had thumb surgery during the season, averaged 5.6 points last season while playing in just 51 games.

Daniels, who joined the Celtics before last season, then suffered a concussion during the Eastern Conference finals against Orlando. He played just four minutes in two Finals games in Boston’s seven-game loss to the Lakers.

Bartelstein also represents Lakers guard Shannon Brown. Sources close to the Lakers expressed optimism that Brown eventually will return to Los Angeles but the sides are still haggling over contract terms.

“We’re still talking,” said Bartelstein, who did not expect any deal to be reached Thursday.

The Lakers are looking to sign swingman Matt Barnes with the $1.765 million left on their mid-level exception. But Bartelstein said a Barnes signing wouldn’t affect Brown possibly re-signing with the Lakers.

It certainly wouldn’t financially since the Lakers have early-Bird rights on Brown, and could exceed the salary cap to sign him. Brown opted last month out of a deal that would have paid him $2.149 million next season.

Jason Collins Expected to Re-Sign With Atlanta

Jason CollinsLAS VEGAS — Atlanta is expected to end up re-signing center Jason Collins.

Sources said Sunday at the NBA Summer League nothing is imminent due to the free agent currently being in Europe. But expectations are he eventually will re-sign after his return later this week, and it would figure to be a minimum deal worth $1.229 million.

Collins, 31, averaged just 0.7 points and 0.4 rebounds in 24 games in 2009-10, his first season with Atlanta. But the Hawks like his locker-room presence, and his 7-foot, 255-pound frame provides plenty of size, if needed.
