NBA Trade Deadline Sees Flurry of Deals

PLANET LOVETRON, NBA UNIVERSE — Woe to those NBA fans who own an authentic or replica jersey or T-shirt of one of the following players:

Gerald Wallace, Dante Cunningham, Joel Przybilla, Aaron Brooks, Goran Dragic, Nazr Mohammed, D.J. White, Morris Peterson, Shane Battier, Hasheem Thabeet, Semih Erden, Luke Harangody, Kendrick Perkins, Nate Robinson, Jeff Green, Nenad Krstic, Baron Davis, Marquis Daniels, Jamario Moon and Mo Williams.

Those men, including draft picks and canvas sacks of cash were traded in copious amounts at one of the most active NBA trade deadlines in memory. Fans, meanwhile, will need to find cash to buy new merchandise or risk being ridiculed for being ironic in wearing an out-of-date jersey.

One day after the Utah Jazz and New Jersey Nets left jaws agape when the Jazz sent All-Star point guard Deron Williams to the Nets for point guard Devin Harris, rookie forward Derrick Favors, two first round picks and dough, the Celtics stunned many when they sent starting center Perkins and bench energizer Robinson to Oklahoma City for forward Green and center Kristic.

Cavs’ Trade for Baron Davis Was All About the Draft Pick

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — What does a rebuilding team do when it wants draft picks to help recover from the departure of the league’s two-time MVP? It trades another of its popular players for a first-round pick, and agrees to take on almost $28 million in salary for an aging, oft-injured point guard.

Such is the fate of the Cleveland Cavaliers that it celebrated a trade Thursday that took point guard Baron Davis from his home in Los Angeles and dropped him in Cleveland in the middle of winter. Davis goes from playing on the same team as Blake Griffin to joining a 10-47 team.

And the Cavs were exultant — because they acquired a first-round draft pick that will give them two lottery picks this summer. They said they were happy about acquiring Davis, too, but sending Mo Williams and Jamario Moon to the Clippers was much more about getting that first-round draft pick.

“Our scouting department just got a little busier, which is a good thing,” said GM Chris Grant.

Agent: Mo Williams Never Asked for Trade From Cavaliers

LeBron James is gone. Cleveland has the worst team in the NBA and just lost an NBA-record 26 straight games.

Despite that, agent Mark Bartelstein said guard Mo Williams never asked for a trade from the Cavaliers.

“No, he didn’t,” Bartelstein told FanHouse on Thursday. “He was going to be a good soldier. The Cavs have been great to him.”

While Williams was willing to stick it out, he was traded Thursday to the Los Angeles Clippers along with forward Jamario Moon for guard Baron Davis and a 2011 first-round pick. The deal, made at the NBA trade deadline, was intriguing enough for Williams to make adjustments to his contract.

Williams originally could opt out this summer of the final two years of his deal, when he is scheduled to earn $8.5 million in each. But, in order to facilitate the trade, Bartelstein said Williams agreed to change his contract so that now he only can opt in the summer of 2012 for the final year.

Bartelstein, though, said Williams does have some sadness in leaving Cleveland.

Clippers Trade Baron Davis to Cavaliers for Mo Williams, Jamario Moon

Baron DavisThe good times appear to be over for Baron Davis in Los Angeles.

As we approach Thursday’s trade deadline, the hits just keep on coming. The latest deal has the Clippers sending Davis to the Cavaliers, along with an unprotected 2011 first round draft pick in exchange for Mo Williams and Jamario Moon.

Marc Spears first reported the deal, which was confirmed by FanHouse’s Sam Amick.

From the Clippers’ standpoint, anything they could do to get out from under the hefty contract of Davis would be a welcome form of relief, despite Davis’ recently improved play alongside rookie sensation Blake Griffin. Davis is averaging almost 13 points and seven assists per game, but if you watch the Clips on a regular basis, you’ll notice that his shot selection is largely still terrible, despite feeding Griffin for the occasionally ridiculous highlight that makes everything seem like it’s working out in Los Angeles.

But it’s not, because Davis is — and now, was — a liability for this young and developing Clippers team, plain and simple.

Cavs Snap Record Losing Streak at 26, Edge Clippers in Overtime

Mo WilliamsCLEVELAND (AP) — It’s over. Finally. Barely.

Nearly two months after it started innocently, the Cleveland Cavaliers stopped their NBA-record losing streak at 26 games Friday night with a 126-119 win in overtime against the Los Angeles Clippers, who did all they could to extend the Cavs’ misery.

Cleveland won for the first time since Dec. 18 against the New York Knicks, and had to go an extra five minutes to ensure it didn’t set a record for the longest skid in pro sports history. The Cavs will gladly settle with tying the NFL‘s Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the worst streak among the four major sports.

It’s one they didn’t want to own, and they played like it.

Antawn Jamison scored 35 points and made the game’s biggest basket, a 3-pointer with 22 seconds left in OT for the Cavs. Daniel Gibson scored 10 in overtime and J.J. Hickson, playing like a man possessed all night in a matchup with Blake Griffin, added 27 points and 14 rebounds.

Antawn Jamison Says Next Season Could Be His Last

DENVER — There are four kids at home to look after. There are PTA meetings to attend, although Antawn Jamison later said that might be a stretch for his life after basketball.

The Cleveland forward already has started to think about retirement. He said before Saturday night’s 127-99 loss to Denver at the Pepsi Center that next season, the last on his contract, could be the final one of his NBA career.

“Definitely,” Jamison, 34, said in an interview with FanHouse about that being a possibility. “I’ve done a lot, man. This is my 13th year and next year will be my 14th year. A lot of people don’t get the opportunity to say that they’ve played for that many years. And to know that I’ve left everything I throw on the court has been a blessing for me.”

Jamison, making $13.36 million this season and $15.08 million next season, said there’s a chance he could look to sign on for one more year after that. But then that definitely would be it.

Lakers Embarrass Cavs, 112-57, in Remarkable Defensive Performance

Los Angeles LakersLOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers humiliated the Cleveland Cavaliers while sending them to their 11th straight loss, rolling to a 112-57 victory on Tuesday night in their best defensive performance in the shot clock era.

Ron Artest and Andrew Bynum each scored 15 points, while Pau Gasol had 13 points and 14 rebounds. Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom and Shannon Brown also scored 13 points for the defending NBA champion Lakers, who led the league’s worst team by 32 points at halftime on their way to winning their fifth in a row.

Reserves Alonzo Gee scored 12 points and Ramon Sessions 10. Cleveland’s point total was a record low by a Lakers opponent. The Cavs shot 30 percent, were outscored 52-28 in the paint and committed 19 turnovers in losing for the 21st time in their last 22 games. They fell to 8-30 overall, 3-18 on the road and 1-5 against the Western Conference.

Cavs Content With Effort, Not Result, in Miami Heat Re-Match

Mo WilliamsMIAMI — Despite losing their ninth game in a row, the mood in the visitor’s locker room wasn’t one of doom and gloom for the Cleveland Cavaliers following their 101-95 defeat at the hands of the Miami Heat.

There may be few moral victories in the NBA, but the Cavs knew they had played their best basketball in weeks, no doubt fueled by playing against their former teammate LeBron James. Despite their best efforts, though, the Heat‘s talent was eventually too much to withstand for the entire game.

“Tonight is a tough loss because we gave ourselves a chance to win the game,” said forward Anderson Varejao, who nonetheless chose to look forward. “I think it was the right way. We played with a lot of effort tonight, we played hard and if we do that every night we’re going to be fine.”
