LaMarr Woodley Receives Franchise Tag From Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers followed suit with teams around the league in applying the franchise tag to their best unrestricted free agent — despite the possibility of the franchise designation being voided after the new Collective Bargaining Agreement is in place — by giving linebacker LaMarr Woodley the nod on Friday for the 2011 season.

Along with Defensive Player of the Year teammates Troy Polamalu and James Harrison, Woodley, 26, has done his share of disrupting offenses since he entered the league in 2006. Woodley’s speed off the edges and ability to shoot gaps to pressure quarterbacks and stop the run has brought life to a defensive front that is aging in key positions.

Woodley is a five-year veteran and posted double-digit sack totals in each of his three seasons as a starter for the black and gold since 2008, making him one of the only two Steelers in franchise history to register at least 10 sacks in three straight seasons. Woodley’s 39 sacks is also a Steelers’ team record for a player in their first four seasons in Pittsburgh.

The linebacker from the University of Michigan was a Pro Bowler in 2010 and since his arrival, Woodley have not been fazed by the big stage of the NFL playoffs. Woodley is the only player in NFL history to post at least one sack in six consecutive postseason games (11).

Woodley finished the 2010 season by recording 50 tackles, 10 sacks, two interceptions (one returned for a TD), three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Extra Point:

The Steelers signed seven players to offseason contracts on Thursday and six of the players were members of the team’s 2010 practice squad. The Steelers signed Pittsburgh native wide receiver Wes Lyons, who attended Woodland Hills High School and was an undrafted rookie free agent from the University of West Virginia for the Jets last season, to a reserve/future contract for the 2011 season.

LaMarr Woodley Given Franchise Tag by Pittsburgh Steelers

LaMarr WoodleyThe Pittsburgh Steelers placed the franchise tag on outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley on Friday.

Woodley, who was drafted by the Steelers in the second round of the 2007 NFL draft, made $550,000 during the final year of his rookie contract in 2010. Under the current collective bargaining agreement, Woodley will now receive the average pay of the top five salaries at his position, paying the 26-year-old linebacker approximately $10.2 million in 2011 if the parties don’t agree on a long-term contract.

‘Fantastic 4′ Dreaming of Perfect Ending to Steelers’ Script

DALLAS — Think Pittsburgh Steelers linebackers, think Fantastic Four.

Lawrence Timmons, James Farrior, LaMarr Woodley and James Harrison are the “4” in the Steelers‘ 3-4 defense. The Fantastic Four. If you are going to employ the 3-4 defense, you need four extraordinary linebackers to give the tactic its groove.

The Steelers, of course, feature an affluent history of prize linebackers, including Hall-of-Fame ones Jack Ham and Jack Lambert. Both led the franchise to repeat Super Bowl glory.

Timmons, Farrior, Woodley and Harrison have that shot in Super Bowl XLV on Sunday.

Farrior and Harrison reach for a third ring. Timmons and Woodley for a second.

The Fantastic Four.

Steelers Have the Santonio Holmes Trade to Thank For Antonio Brown

The first time Steelers rookie wide receiver Antonio Brown touched the football in his NFL career he took it 89 yards for a touchdown in a Week 2 win against the Tennessee Titans. His role in the offense, however, was slow to develop in the first half of the season, but in the second half, as well as the playoffs, he’s become a regular target in the passing game — and in some crucial situations — making some of the biggest plays of the Steelers season.

During their 31-24 win against the Baltimore Ravens in the divisional round, he caught three passes, including a perfectly thrown 58-yard bomb from Ben Roethlisberger late in the fourth quarter on a third-and-19 that helped to set up the game-winning touchdown. In the AFC Championship game, a 24-19 win over the New York Jets, Brown caught just one pass, but it came on a third-and-six that all but sealed the win for the Steelers and punched their ticket to the Super Bowl. He also helped set up that game-clinching drive with a 30-yard kickoff return to put the Steelers at mid-field, taking some of the pressure off of their offense.

Said head coach Mike Tomlin after Sunday’s game, “That’s pretty funny, isn’t it? Third and six to win the game to a rookie from Central Michigan, but those guys have been proving they belong here for the better part of the second half of the season.”

Also funny? How the Steelers ended up with the rookie from Central Michigan. Had they not traded Santonio Holmes to the New York Jets prior to the season, there’s a good chance that Brown wouldn’t even be a member of the Steelers.

Richard Seymour Ejected for Punching Ben Roethlisberger: Video

Richard Seymour punchIn the first half of what has been an extremely physical and chippy game between the Steelers and Raiders, Richard Seymour was ejected for hitting Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger with an open-hand slap to the jaw following a Roethlisberger-to-Emmanuel Sanders touchdown pass, which gave the Steelers a 21-3 lead.

Following the touchdown, there was a scuffle near the line of scrimmage — as there was after many plays in the first half — and as Roethlisberger stepped in to the middle of it, Seymour hit him in the jaw area, knocking Roethlisberger to the ground.

Seymour was instantly ejected.

The Steelers were penalized eight times for 103 yards in the first half, including a borderline roughing the passer call on LaMarr Woodley. Given the way the NFL has attempted to protect players, especially the quarterbacks, this season from blows to the head, it should be interesting to see how the the league handles this incident. If a routine roughing the passer penalty results in a fine, what will be the result of a play that led to an ejection?

Thaddeus Gibson, OLB Waived by Steelers, Claimed by 49ers

Thaddeus GibsonThe Steelers knew they were running a risk when they waived fourth-round pick Thaddeus Gibson this past weekend to make room for defensive end Steve McClendon. On Monday, the Steelers’ loss turned out to be the 49ers‘ gain.

San Francisco claimed the rookie outside linebacker off waivers on Monday. Although he’s unlikely to see significant time this year, Gibson is a good fit for the 49ers’ 3-4 defense. He played relatively well on defense and on special teams for the Steelers during the preseason, but he was caught on the wrong side of a numbers game for a team that also drafted a second-round outside linebacker (Jason Worilds) to back up James Harrison and LaMarr Woodley. Inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons is also able to play outside linebacker if needed.

The Steelers actually were pretty happy with Gibson’s play, but felt that they could run the risk of letting Gibson go because of the development of Worilds.

Pittsburgh Steelers 2010 Season Preview: Waiting on Big Ben

Ben Roethlisberger Steelers previewFanHouse’s 2010 NFL Season Preview features division-by-division predictions based on our tried and true “Heat Index” formula. Each team is graded on a scale of 1-10 (10 being highest) in five key categories: Offense, Defense, Special Teams, Coaching and Intangibles. The higher the score, the better we think the team will be this season. Coming Sept. 2: NFC North

Hey have you heard that Ben Roethlisberger is suspended? And if not, when did you get in from Latvia?

At this point, my 86-year-old grandmother knows the story of Roethlisberger’s offseason troubles. And every preview about the Steelers this year is focused on what his suspension means.

What Roethlisberger’s indiscretion really did was destroy what had been a very carefully constructed plan. Before Roethlisberger’s run-in in Milledgeville,Ga., Pittsburgh had brought back ex-Steelers Larry Foote and Antwaan Randle El, re-signed potential free agents Ryan Clark and Casey Hampton and franchised kicker Jeff Reed. The plan was to bring in enough reinforcements to make at least one more run at the Super Bowl before the core of this team (which has won two Super Bowls in the past five seasons) got too old.

Brandon Graham Signs With Eagles

Filed under:

Brandon Graham Signs with EaglesSlowly but surely, the first-round dominoes are falling. The latest: No. 13 overall pick Brandon Graham, who signed a five-year deal with the Eagles on Thursday, according to multiple reports. Graham followed No. 8 pick Rolando McClain (Oakland), No. 19 pick Sean Witherspoon (Atlanta) and No. 25 pick Tim Tebow (Denver), all of whom agreed to their rookie contracts within a 24-hour span.

Philadelphia traded the No. 24 pick and two third-round selections in April’s draft to jump up and pick Graham, a standout rush lineman at Michigan.

“I put a lot of value in guys that love to play the game and play relentless football and that have the character,” Eagles coach Andy Reid said after the pick was made. “I thought [Graham] kind of filled all those spots.”
