Boise State Pounds Utah in MAACO Bowl Las Vegas

Doug MartinLAS VEGAS — There was no fancy BCS trophy and no national championship on the line.

A single loss — the only one in the last 27 games — made sure of that for Boise State.

But Wednesday night’s dominating 26-3 win in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas over Pac-12-bound Utah sure felt good to the No. 10 Broncos.

“It is what it is,” BSU junior quarterback Kellen Moore said after winning game MVP honors with 319 yards and two touchdowns on 28-of-38 passing. “We still had a great season and, I feel, had a great team.”

There are few that will dispute that.

The 12-1 Broncos missed out on another BCS bowl game by just a few inches but leave the Western Athletic Conference for the Mountain West as arguably the top non-automatic qualifying team in the country.

And despite a lousy first quarter and numerous missed opportunities against the Utes, Boise State outclassed its 19th-ranked opponent in virtually every way. Piling up 523 yards of offense and limiting Utah to just 200, the Broncos turned an early close game into a game that might not have been as close as the 23-point final margin indicated.

“With the defense playing that well, I knew, I knew, that we’d hit a stride and get it going,” Boise State coach Chris Petersen said.

That stride came, for the most part, in one play.

Boise State Dominates Utah in MAACO Bowl Las Vegas

Doug MartinLAS VEGAS — Boise State is not joining Utah in the Mountain West Conference next year. Instead, the Broncos are giving the Utes a big kick in the tail as they exit the conference.

The No. 10 Broncos overcame a sloppy first quarter and dominated Utah — a team BSU thought it was joining a few months ago when they accepted a spot in the MWC — with a 26-3 win in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas.

With the Utes headed to the Pac-12 next year, Boise State made sure they left the Mountain West with their first post-season loss in a decade.

Kellen Moore and Doug Martin made sure the Utes didn’t leave the conference with much of a warm, fuzzy feeling. Moore threw for 318 yards and a pair of touchdowns while Martin ran for 147 yards and a touchdown.

For about 21 minutes, though, Boise State (12-1) looked like the team that might end up on the wrong side of the scoreboard.

Boise State gave Utah every opportunity in the world to build an early lead. A pair of fumbles, an interception and a botched fake punt from the Broncos were turned into only three Ute points.

And against any football team, let alone a 10th-ranked squad like Boise State, wasting opportunities to put a team down early is a recipe for disaster.

Boise State Broncos vs. Utah Utes: MAACO Bowl Las Vegas

Chris Petersen Kyle WhittinghamBoise State and Utah certainly had higher hopes for their respective seasons a few months ago. At one point, both were ranked as top-six teams in the nation. The Utes began 8-0 while the Broncos began 10-0.

Instead, they square off Dec. 22 in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.

No. 20 Utah was blasted by TCU and then pretty well dominated by Notre Dame. The Utes squeaked out wins over San Diego State and rival BYU to close the season 10-2.

No. 10 Boise State lost a heartbreaker to then-No. 19 Nevada before responding to throttle Utah State and finish 11-1.

The Broncos are led by Heisman Trophy finalist Kellen Moore, who was second nationally in passing efficiency rating. He threw for 3,506 and 33 touchdowns while completing 71 percent of his passes and throwing just five picks. Titus Young and Austin Pettis are the prolific receivers while Doug Martin gives the offense balance as a 1,000-yard rusher.

The team is balanced as well, as Boise State yields just 259.3 yards and 13.6 points per contest — both good enough for fourth in FBS.

Utah, Boise State Set for Marquee Non-BCS Matchup in Las Vegas

Boise State UtahLAS VEGAS — No Alabama. No Oklahoma. No national championship.

No interest?

No chance.

The 2010 version of the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas might not feature BCS automatic-qualifying conference teams, but it has plenty of BCS history — and likely a little BCS future.

Boise State and Utah have combined for just three losses this season and share four BCS Bowl victories in the past few years — the most of any bowl matchup this year. According to numerous college football experts, the Broncos and Utes are the best bowl game not featuring BCS-arranged teams.

Utah, the original BCS Busters, are off to the Pac-12 next year where a one-loss conference season will be good enough most years to qualify for the Rose Bowl. In the Mountain West, one loss means relative obscurity on a national scale.

Boise State, the next in line to crash the BCS old-boys-club party, is bolting the WAC for the Mountain West (where the Broncos thought they’d have Utah, BYU and TCU as partners in chasing BCS automatic-qualifying status). It finds itself right back where it has been for the past decade — the pesky team with the blue turf and explosive offense perpetually on the verge of causing trouble in BCS board meetings.

Boise State Fan Bill Morgan Doesn’t Let Being Blind Hinder His Enjoyment

Filed under:

BOISE, Idaho – When Boise State takes on Utah in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas on Wednesday, Bill Morgan won’t be in the same room as his wife Lynda. But it’s not because they live in a house divided – it’s always like that on game day for one of the Broncos’ biggest fans.

In fact, Morgan is never even in his house. When you know what’s going to happen before everyone else, it stands to reason that you can become the most annoying person in the room.

However, Morgan’s ability to see in the future doesn’t come from some prophetic power.

He’s simply blind.

“We tried watching games together but she couldn’t do it with me,” said Morgan, who suffers from the genetic disease retinitis pigmentosa and has been blind for more than 50 years. “When I listen to the games, the radio is about three to four seconds ahead of television and I would ruin it for her. I would be hollering or making a comment – and she literally hadn’t seen it on the screen.”

Cam Newton Wins Heisman Trophy

Cam Newton Heisman TrophyCam Newton, the quarterback for Auburn University, has won the 2010 Heisman Trophy.

Newton beat out worthy adversaries — LaMichael James of Oregon, Andrew Luck of Stanford and Kellen Moore of Boise State — in landslide fashion. He ended with 2,263 points. Luck was the runner-up with 1,079 points and James finished third with 916. Moore amassed 635.

Broken down regionally, Newton won each and every one, including the Far West.

There were 105 ballots that completely omitted Newton’s name, but he was the first place vote on 93 percent of the ballots.

Newton has led Auburn to a 13-0 record and a berth in the BCS Championship game, which will be played Jan. 10 in Glendale, Ariz.

The 6-foot-6 junior from College Park, Ga., led the nation in passer efficiency rating (188.2) and was second in rushing touchdowns (20). He completed 165 of his 246 passes for 2,589 yards and 28 touchdowns against just six interceptions. He ran the ball 242 times for 1,409 yards and the aforementioned 20 scores. He amassed six 100-yard rushing games and two 300-yard passing games.

Newton becomes the third player in Auburn history to win the coveted award, joining Bo Jackson (1985) and Pat Sullivan (1971). Jackson was on-hand for his Silver Anniversary to see Newton crowned. With three, Auburn now only trails Notre Dame (seven), Ohio State (seven), USC (six) and Oklahoma (five) in Heisman Trophy winners.

The last two winners — and three of the last four — have now come from the SEC.

This also marks the second consecutive season the award has gone to a player from a school in the state of Alabama. Mark Ingram of Alabama won the 2009 Trophy.

Heisman Trophy Finalists: Quarterback Kellen Moore of Boise State

With a scorched earth assault on the school record book, Boise State junior quarterback Kellen Moore has rendered the phrase “prototype quarterback” meaningless.

While he joins a pair of first-glance NFL quarterback bodies at Saturday’s Heisman Trophy award ceremony in New York City, people will probably begin wondering where Boise State’s famous passer is as they ask who allowed the “Leave it to Beaver” stand-in on stage.

Checking in at 6-foot-flat and 187 pounds, Moore gives off the appearance of a slot receiver or a kicker – not the team’s star quarterback. It’s for that same reason that Moore, who obliterated Washington state high school’s passing records, wasn’t offered a scholarship by any nearby Pac-10 school.

“Trust me, everybody in the Pac10 wishes they had Kellen right now,” Boise State coach Chris Petersen said. “I don’t know why they didn’t take a chance on him.”

Heisman Trophy Finalists Announced: Cam Newton Heads Field of Four

The 2010 Heisman Trophy finalists were revealed Monday and, not surprisingly, Auburn‘s Cam Newton headlined the field.

Also joining Newton in New York for Saturday evening’s Heisman Trophy presentation will be LaMichael James of Oregon, Andrew Luck of Stanford and Kellen Moore of Boise State.

The 2010 Heisman Trophy presentation will air on ESPN at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Saturday, December 11.

Newton led Auburn to a 13-0 record and into the BCS Championship Game. Along the way, he has amassed a huge stat line. Newton leads the nation in passer efficiency rating (188.2) and is tied for second in rushing touchdowns (20). He’s 10th in rushing yards and has thrown 28 touchdown passes — against just six interceptions — while leading the nation in yards per passing attempt (10.5). Newton appears to be the obvious front-runner, and only off-field questions seem able to prevent him from winning the coveted award. Should Newton win, he’d be Auburn’s first winner since Bo Jackson in 1985.

James is the leading rusher in the nation (1,682 yards with a 6.0 average per carry) and a key cog of the high-powered offense for BCS Championship Game participant Oregon (12-0). James’ 21 touchdowns also were tops in the nation, and he did all this despite missing one game due to suspension. Oregon has never had a Heisman Trophy winner.

Moore led Boise State to an 11-1 record and a share of the WAC championship. He’s second in efficiency rating and yards per passing attempt only to Newton. He’s eighth in passing yards, third in completion percentage and fourth in passing touchdowns — with an outstanding 33-to-5 TD to interception ratio. If Moore wins, he’d be the first player from a non-AQ conference to win the award since Ty Detmer of BYU won in 1990.

Luck led Stanford to an 11-1 record and the No. 4 spot in the final BCS rankings, the school’s highest finish ever. The Cardinal’s only loss was at Oregon. Luck ranks seventh in passing efficiency and was one of just five quarterbacks to complete at least 70 percent of his passes. Of that group, only Moore had more touchdown passes than Luck’s 28. The only Heisman Trophy winner in Stanford history was Jim Plunkett in 1970. Luck becomes the second consecutive Cardinal to make the trip as a finalist, as Toby Gerhardt went last season.

Mark Ingram of Alabama won the Heisman Trophy last season.

FanHouse Fab 40: On to Glendale

With all three favorites winning the BCS conference championship games on Saturday and No. 1 Oregon taking care of Oregon State, my Associated Press Top 25 ballot looks a lot like last week’s.

My top 10 teams remained the same: No. 1 Oregon, No. 2 Auburn, No. 3 TCU, No. 4 Stanford, No. 5 Wisconsin, No. 6 Ohio State, No. 7 Michigan State, No. 8 Arkansas, No. 9 Boise State and No. 10 Virginia Tech.

Big 12 champion Oklahoma climbed three spots to No. 11, while the three BCS conference championship losers – Florida State (ACC), Nebraska (Big 12), South Carolina (SEC) predictably dropped a few spots.

The next FanHouse Fab 40 will coincide with the release of the next AP poll. That will be Jan. 11 following the BCS title game between Auburn and Oregon in Glendale, Ariz.
