Nate Allen Out for Season as Eagles Defense Piles Up Injuries

At 10-4, the Philadelphia Eagles have taken control of the NFC East, needing just to beat Minnesota (5-8 heading into Monday’s game with NFC North leader Chicago) and Dallas (5-9) at home to secure their first division title in five years.

However, the Eagles’ consecutive tight road victories over NFC East rivals Dallas and New York came at a price: their top two draft choices. First-rounder Brandon Graham, who had been seeing plenty of time behind left defensive end Juqua Parker, suffered a season-ending keen injury during the 30-27 victory over the Cowboys on Dec. 12. And Sunday, first-rounder Nate Allen, the starter at free safety all season, tore his right patella tendon during the second quarter of the 38-31 thriller over the Giants.

Eagles coach Andy Reid said Monday that Allen will have season-ending surgery on Tuesday. That makes Kurt Coleman, seventh-rounder out of Ohio State, a starter. Fellow seventh-rounder Jamar Chaney is holding the fort at middle linebacker while Stewart Bradley recovers from a dislocated elbow suffered at Dallas. Reid said that Bradley is unlikely to return against the Vikings.

Coleman said he’s ready for the challenge which seems likely to include Philadelphia’s first home playoff game since the wild card round in 2006.

“They brought me on this team for a reason,” he said. “(Veteran strong safety Quintin Mikell) has been helping me out tremendously. So I’ll definitely be ready next week.”Right tackle Winston Justice, a game-time scratch against the Giants with a knee injury, might play against Minnesota.

“He’s continuing to make progress,” Reid said. “He had a good workout today. We’ll just see how he does with the bull-rush with a hard aggressive push on that leg. Right now, he looks pretty good.”

Asante Samuel, Juqua Parker Return to Practice From Injury; ‘Ready to Go’

The Philadelphia Eagles were back at practice on Wednesday after a five-day break and they were quite happy that Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel (knee) and defensive end Juqua Parker (hip) were back in the saddle after missing the past two games.

“I think they’re ready to go,” said coach Andy Reid, whose team won three of four games in 18 days before the well-earned respite and share the NFC East lead with the New York Giants at 8-4. “They feel good and we’ll just see how they do in practice. … When they weren’t in the defense, I expected the guys that stepped in for them (cornerback Joselio Hanson and rookie end Brandon Graham) and to do a good job and they did that.

“I’ll also say that they’re a big part of our defense. Both of them have great personalities and they’re both veteran players and they’ve had success in this league. I welcome these guys back.”

However, Philadelphia’s offense was minus right tackle Winston Justice, at least on Wednesday, with a hyper-extended knee. Justice said that he expects to return to the field this week and start Sunday at Dallas.

“In my mind I’m telling myself yes because I think with injuries it starts with your mind first,” he said of getting on the field on Thursday. “Maybe it’s more mental because it feels unstable and the brace (helps) me feel like it’s more stable.”

If Justice can’t make it back, King Dunlap, who filled in for two games while Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters was hurt, would get the call.

“We have full confidence in King,” Reid said.

The Eagles’ final four games are against hot teams — two with the Cowboys (winners of three of four under interim coach Jason Garrett) and one each with the Giants (winners of two in a row) and the Minnesota Vikings (winners of two straight under interim coach Leslie Frazier), but the mood was certainly upbeat on Wednesday in Philadelphia.

“We’re fired up, ready to get out there and be sharp,” said quarterback Michael Vick, who was eclipsed by New England’s Tom Brady as the NFL’s leader in passer rating over the weekend.

Juqua Parker, Nate Allen Unsung Heroes for Eagles

One lost his job to a rookie. The other is a rookie whose arrival helped prompt the team to cut his predecessor this summer. One’s a defensive end. The other’s a safety. So Juqua Parker and Nate Allen don’t have that much in common other than being the biggest playmakers so far for Philadelphia’s defense.

The 32-year-old Parker, supplanted by top draft pick Brandon Graham, has four sacks already, halfway to the most he recorded during any of his previous nine seasons and tied for second-most in the NFL. The 22-year-old Allen, chosen in the second round in April, has two interceptions, also tied for second in the league and just seven shy of his total during his 39 games as a starter at South Florida.

“(Parker’s) not a guy that needs any extra motivation,” Eagles defensive coordinator Sean McDermott said when asked how the veteran handled the demotion. “I would hope if an individual is taken out of the starting role, that he continues to push and plays even harder. I think that was the case with (Parker). He’s an extremely driven individual and hard-nosed football player and a leader for the defensive line.

Brandon Graham Signs With Eagles

Brandon Graham Signs with EaglesSlowly but surely, the first-round dominoes are falling. The latest: No. 13 overall pick Brandon Graham, who signed a five-year deal with the Eagles on Thursday, according to multiple reports. Graham followed No. 8 pick Rolando McClain (Oakland), No. 19 pick Sean Witherspoon (Atlanta) and No. 25 pick Tim Tebow (Denver), all of whom agreed to their rookie contracts within a 24-hour span.

Philadelphia traded the No. 24 pick and two third-round selections in April’s draft to jump up and pick Graham, a standout rush lineman at Michigan.

“I put a lot of value in guys that love to play the game and play relentless football and that have the character,” Eagles coach Andy Reid said after the pick was made. “I thought [Graham] kind of filled all those spots.”
