Notre Dame Dominates Miami in Sun Bowl

Losing to Tulsa on Oct. 30 was easily the low point of the season for Brian Kelly’s first year as coach of Notre Dame. Since then, however, the Fighting Irish have come alive. The exclamation point was Friday’s 33-17 domination of Miami in the Sun Bowl.

With the victory, Notre Dame closes the season on a four-game winning streak and a record of 8-5.

Things came a bit easy on both sides of the ball from the get-go against the Hurricanes Friday. Miami quarterback Jacory Harris was picked off three times in the first half and was benched. Freshman Stephen Morris entered the game and threw yet another. Morris’ pick was to Harrison Smith — giving the senior safety his third interception of the game. He entered with just four picks in his entire career.

The takeaways helped the Irish build a 27-0 lead late in the first half, as the offense took full advantage of all the opportunities. The lead was 30-3 by the end of the third quarter before Kelly called the dogs off and Miami scored a couple late touchdowns. The Hurricanes actually outgained the Irish, but many yards came when the game was already decided.

Miami Beats Georgia Tech Behind Freshman QB to Stay Alive in ACC Race

ATLANTA – It looked like Miami’s chances of a revival season had ended two weeks ago at Virginia. Jacory Harris was lost to a concussion early in the 24-19 loss and the team’s chances appeared just as wobbly.

Miami, though, didn’t go down for the count.

First-place Virginia Tech‘s visit to south Florida next Saturday will mean something after all. The championship of the ACC’s Coastal Division is still in play.

The Hurricanes have taken care of business in a big way the past two weeks, with Harris’ fill-in playing a major part.

Stephen Morris, once fourth on the depth chart and expected to be redshirted as a freshman, threw a touchdown pass to Leonard Hankerson (right, in an earlier game) in the final seconds to beat Maryland a week ago.

On Saturday, the Hurricanes didn’t need any late heroics. They took charge early and ripped defending ACC champion Georgia Tech 35-10 to improve to 5-2 in the ACC and 7-3 overall.

Miami rolled up 507 yards, with Morris’ passing complementing a ground game that churned out 277 yards. He was 10-for-18 for 230 yards and connected with Hankerson for a 79-yard TD in the third quarter.

Miami Whips Georgia Tech 35-10

ATLANTA – It will take a victory next Saturday at home against first-place Virginia Tech and then some help, but Miami is still alive in the race for ACC’s Coastal Division title.

The Hurricanes, 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the ACC, rolled up nearly 500 yards behind fill-in quarterback Stephen Morris and defeated Georgia Tech 35-10 on Saturday.

Morris, making his second start in place of the injured Jacory Harris, connected with Leonard Hankerson (right, from earlier this season) for a 79-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and was 10-for-18 for 230 yards.

Defending ACC champion Georgia Tech fell to 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the ACC with its third straight loss. Tevin Washington made his first start for the Yellow Jackets at quarterback in place of Joshua Nesbitt, out for the season with a broken arm.

Facing a 3-4 defense for the first time this season, Miami drove 88 yards for touchdowns on its first two possessions. Lamar Miller ran 12 yards for the first TD and Damien Berry scored from 5 yards out for the second.

Fresh Skill Players Lead Miami to Victory Over Maryland

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Stephen Morris couldn’t see his first game-winning play as a quarterback at Miami.

He most definitely heard it.

Drilled as he uncoiled a 35-yard touchdown pass to Leonard Hankerson in the final minute, Morris quickly sped to the end zone to celebrate the clinching score of a 26-20 defeat of Maryland before a generously announced crowd of 55,434 at Sun Life Stadium.

Not bad for a first start.

“When he threw the ball, he got hit, so he said he couldn’t see it,” Hankerson said. “He was waiting on the crowd. When he heard the crowd go, he knew it was a touchdown. He was jumping up and down, and by the time he got down there he couldn’t breathe.”

Morris didn’t speak with reporters afterward, but he authored arguably the play of the season for the Hurricanes (6-3, 4-2 ACC). If Miami wasn’t in disarray after last week’s loss at Virginia, it surely was on uneven ground.

Like Ships in the Night, Florida State Sails While Miami Sinks

MIAMI — Outside it was a carnival, drunken revelry in the city of eternal summer. Women competed to see who could wear the least clothing, men competed to see who could be the drunkest. Garnet and gold vs. green and orange, Florida State vs. Miami is what the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party would look like with a night kickoff. Babylon drenched in deep humidity. If only the game had matched the intensity of the party. Instead, Florida State delivered a deliberate and consistent beating in all phases of the game that left little doubt which program is ascendant. In its fourth season under Randy Shannon, Miami has gone up against Ohio State and Florida State and been found severely lacking.

If the Hurricanes are truly ready to reclaim their position among college football’s elite, Saturday night’s game offered no evidence to help make that argument. Jimbo Fisher’s Florida State Seminoles jumped out to a 21-0 first-half lead behind three Jermaine Thomas touchdowns and were never seriously challenged after that. Eventually, the Seminoles scalped the Hurricanes with a 45-17 victory that, on the same night the Florida Gators fell victim to another Les Miles miracle, left an argument as to which is the best football team in the state of Florida. After several years of living in the Gators shadow, Florida State has a chance to lay claim to that title come November.

Until then, with three consecutive ACC wins — by 31, 20 and 28 points — how good is Florida State? Good enough to be favored in every game until the final contest for state pride against the Gators. In his first season at Florida State, it now looks like Jimbo Fisher (pictured above) may win 10 games, potentially 11. Be still those Seminole hearts. So let’s not down downplay how big this game was for Fisher or Florida State: a road win in a rivalry game that used to define college football. Sure, this game is a pale comparison to the contests that once determined national title contenders, but Fisher is not getting lost in Bobby Bowden’s shadow.

After the 30-point defeat at Oklahoma, many Seminole fans worried that Fisher had secretly been in control of the program for the past few years anyway. That the program’s descent into mediocrity wasn’t just Bowden’s fault. No longer. Fisher has a signature victory all his own, he’s earned his war paint, become a Seminole in full.

Hurricanes Ride Risky Jacory Harris to Rewarding Win Over Clemson

Jacory HarrisCLEMSON, S.C. — Putting Jacory Harris under center for your football team is the ultimate risk-reward scenario.

Miami’s junior quarterback is breathtaking to behold. His rocket throwing arm and natural scrambling ability make the Hurricanes’ offense a threat to score at any time.

Yet, sometimes, watching him is like plunking your mortgage money down at the roulette wheel and letting that little white ball spin, deciding your fate.

Yeah, something good could happen.

Or the ball could slide into a red slot when you’ve bet your money on black.

Saturday afternoon, Miami coach Randy Shannon walked away feeling lucky.

Did Harris make some head-scratchingly dumb plays? Sure. He also made enough big plays — and capitalized on Clemson‘s mistakes — to carry No.16 Miami to a 30-21 win over the Tigers before 81,500 at Memorial Stadium.

Miami Hurricanes Force Six Turnovers in Victory at Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. — Brandon Harris danced across the field back toward the Miami sideline, arms waving in celebration.

Miami’s junior cornerback (right, in action earlier this season) had just made the hit of the game, and he knew it.

With Clemson tailback Andre Ellington trucking around right end, going for a crucial fourth-down conversion, Harris met him, stuffing Ellington cold for no gain.

It was the latest in a series of crucial defensive plays that helped hand No.16 Miami a 30-21 win over Clemson on Saturday in Memorial Stadium.

The Hurricanes forced six turnovers, turning two of them into touchdowns, and turned Clemson’s inexperienced wide receiver corps completely punchless.

That was enough to sustain an offense that went scoreless for a 27-minute, 20-second second-half stretch.

The victory improved the Hurricanes’ record to 3-1 (1-0 ACC). Clemson fell to 2-2, 0-1.

Apprentice Trumps Mentor as Miami Throttles Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH — The football coaching community is often called a fraternity — part guild, part friendship, part protection society. Relationships are forged and career arcs weave together as coaching trees expand and evolve. The relationship between Pittsburgh coach Dave Wannstedt and Miami coach Randy Shannon came full circle Thursday when their fraternal bonds were tested in a battle between their respective programs. It was the apprentice claiming victory, however, as Miami felled Wannstedt’s Panthers 31-3 in a lopsided affair.

Their story began at the University of Miami, with Wannstedt a member of the Hurricanes’ defensive coaching staff. Shannon was an on-field leader of several elite Hurricane defenses molded in part by Wannstedt. Wannstedt later moved on to the Dallas Cowboys, and the organization drafted Shannon. Further down the road, Wannstedt accepted the Miami Dolphins’ head coaching job and again brought Shannon on-board. The two share history and a friendship. Shannon consulted with Wannstedt after accepting the Hurricanes’ gig in 2007.

Earlier in the week, Wannstedt said the programs were very similar in their philosophy and approach. It’s a tough, gritty approach both share. They stress defense and consistency. Schematically, they are strong devotees to pro-style systems on both offense and defense, and it shows in their teams’ toughness and power.

Collegiality aside, Shannon manhandled his mentor’s squad from the outset. Although many anticipated a grind-it-out game, Shannon took to the air early.

Miami QB Jacory Harris Received Hate Message After Loss to Ohio State

Jacory HarrisCORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Miami quarterback Jacory Harris says he received a Twitter message after the Hurricanes’ loss to Ohio State from an individual saying the school should not have “a black quarterback here.”

Harris says he did not respond to the message. He did not indicate if it was considered a threat, although he acknowledged receiving similar messages in the past.

Harris says, “It’s not a problem, not with me.”

Miami coach Randy Shannon banned his team from using Twitter last week, citing the desire to limit distractions and keep the focus on football. Shannon told The Associated Press on Sunday that the Twitter ban had “nothing” to do with comments that any player received on the networking site.

Harris was in uniform an hour before practice Sunday, studying film in Miami’s offensive meeting room.
