Ravens Elbow Their Way Past Broncos to Top of AFC

BALTIMORE — At 4-1, the Baltimore Ravens have the best record in the AFC. The biggest reason was on display Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium: against teams like the Denver Broncos, the Ravens do their best to beat their opponent into submission.

“That’s the type of team we want to be,” head coach John Harbaugh said after the Ravens dominated the Broncos on both sides of the line of scrimmage and became the first AFC team to four wins with a 31-17 victory that was neither as lopsided nor as close as the score indicated.

“That’s the type that I think the Ravens have always wanted to be, and we want to be that in all three phases — we want to be a rough, tough, physical team.”

Defensively, the Ravens rarely have been anything but this season, and on Sunday they made a one-dimensional Broncos offense (all Kyle Orton‘s passing all the time) seem even more one-dimensional. The nominal effort to establish a ground game was abandoned early, and even though the Broncos lost a key receiver, rookie Demaryius Thomas, in the second quarter when he got leveled on a kickoff return, they had no choice but to move the ball through the air. Laurence Maroney, Correll Buckhalter and Andre Brown combined for a paltry 39 yards on 13 carries, a 3.0 average sprinkled with plenty of takedowns at the line or behind it.

Ravens’ Secondary Strengthens: Lardarius Webb Activated From PUP List

After a strong performance early in the 2009 season that ended with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, Baltimore Ravens cornerback Lardarius Webb began recovery that has finally resulted with his activation from the physically unable to perform list.

This is great news for a team that has high expectations to play in the Super Bowl in February and for a secondary that has issues with covering the deep ball. Since cornerback Domonique Foxworth went down for the season with a torn ACL, the Ravens have been rumored to be willing to bring in another veteran cornerback via trade to help strengthen the secondary.

Having Webb back in the lineup is a tremendous relief for the Ravens, with cornerback Fabian Washington making his comeback from an ACL injury suffered a year ago. Cornerback Cary Williams has been a special surprise. In the first two preseason games, Williams had three interceptions. With Williams’ good play and Washington’s return, Webb will further bolster the Ravens’ secondary. Trade talk for the Ravens’ secondary has died down.

IMG Academy Proves Boot Camp Before Training Camp for NFL Players

Players working outBRADENTON, Fla. — Training camp for most NFL players doesn’t start for another week or so, yet Kansas City Chiefs rookie Dexter McCluster was getting an earful from a couple veterans Tuesday. The mini-lecture was constructive. It was also from members of two other teams.

Players, they say, are made in the offseason, but there is no NFL offseason, anymore; not even in the countdown days to camp that once were used to recharge the batteries. For many a pro football player, the hottest days of July are as high-voltage as the rest.

“You only got one release, man, so dudes are gonna get used to that [stuff],” Baltimore cornerback Fabian Washington, a former first-round draft pick, told the kid during a workout this week under an unforgiving afternoon sun. “You gotta be able to release outside — but also speed release inside, too.”

Jacksonville cornerback Michael Coe grabbed the young receiver and tossed out a couple more pointers.

“When you have pads on, you’re gonna have to learn to drop a shoulder coming off [the line of scrimmage],” Coe explained, pulling the apprentice closer. “I’ve got long arms, so I might be able to grab or use my hands to direct you. Dip that shoulder, though, and keep me off you.”

NFL Notebook, July 20: Ed Reed Reportedly Could Miss First Six Games

Ed ReedHere’s what’s happening around the National Football League on Tuesday, July 20, 2010:

o. Ravens super safety Ed Reed would miss the first six weeks of the season if offseason hip surgery forces him to the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, the Baltimore Sun‘s Ravens Insider reported.

According to the Sun, Reed recently stated that he was only about 35 percent recovered from the surgery. Reed missed four games in December because of the injury before returning for the season finale and the team’s two playoff games.

He underwent reconstructive hip surgery sometime after the draft.

The playmaking Reed, who has 46 career interceptions and has scored six career TDs, is also looking for a new contract. Earlier this month, he told Baltimore radio station 105.7, “I’m not making it a big deal, but I think it needs to be taken care of.

Reed has three years left on a six-year deal he signed in 2006.

In addition to Reed, the Sun lists CBs Lardarius Webb and Fabian Washington, and LB Brendon Ayanbadejo as Ravens candidates for the PUP list.

o. Joe Namath, Winston Hill and Don Maynard, who helped lift the Jets to the epic upset of the Colts in Super Bowl III, will be three of the six in the first class of the team’s ring of honor in the new stadium the Jets will share with the Giants in East Rutherford, N.J., the team announced.

NFL Notebook, May 24: Broncos Refute Orton Rumors

Kyle OrtonHere’s what’s happening around the National Football League on Monday, May 24, 2010:

o. There appears to be conflicting information floating around about Kyle Orton‘s future with the Broncos. On Sunday, the Denver Post reported that the team had shopped Orton this offseason after adding Brady Quinn and Tim Tebow. But later in the day, a team official texted ESPN’s Adam Schefter that “Kyle Orton Has NEVER been available or discussed. Ever! Period.”

It’s hard to definitively say which set of information is more accurate. But even if the Broncos aren’t actively discussing an Orton trade at the moment, should Quinn and Tebow perform well in camp, that could quickly change. Orton’s only signed through the 2010 season, and a team desperate for a veteran QB could be willing to float a middle-of-the-road draft pick in exchange for Orton.

“Oh, I’m competing for the job, but I certainly feel like it is my job, and my teammates know that,” Orton said last week after a Denver practice. “I’m going to keep on trying to show that to them every single day.”

o. It didn’t take long for Eric Berry to ascend the Chiefs’ depth chart. According to KCChiefs.com’s Josh Looney, Berry replaced Reshard Langford on Kansas City’s first-team defense at Monday’s OTA.

The starting free safety spot is probably Berry’s to lose — Jon McGraw started nine games there last season and was underwhelming.
