NHL Trade Deadline: Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks have two of the NHL’s best defensemen in Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook — but will be looking for more blue line help at the NHL trade deadline.

If they can afford it.

“When you look around the league, I think everybody has their comparable needs,” said coach Joel Quenneville. “I think everybody likes to have depth on the back end. That’s generally how everybody would like to improve their team.”

Keith won the Norris Trophy in 2010 after he and blue line partner Seabrook helped the Hawks claim the Stanley Cup. They also played key roles as Team Canada won Olympic gold. But after that dynamic duo and Brian Campbell, the Hawks don’t have much defensive experience as they try to defend their crown.

NHL Trade Deadline: Florida Panthers

Come inside the showroom. The cellar-dwelling Florida Panthers are selling and they have plenty of soon-to-be free agents that could be solid rentals, even if a few have some extra miles on them.

The Panthers also have plenty of unrestricted free agents at season’s end, including Tomas Vokoun, the team’s elite goalie who has carried them for long stretches during his four seasons in South Florida. (He’s making $6.3 million this season, but a team would have to foot less than $1.5 million in prorated salary.) It could be hard to part with Vokoun with nobody behind him primed to take over between the pipes.

The other veterans set to become unrestricted free agents would be easy to let go, including forwards Cory Stillman, Radek Dvorak, Christopher Higgins and Marty Reasoner along with defenseman Bryan McCabe. But so far it’s the players signed at least though the 2012-13 season — forwards David Booth and Stephen Weiss — that have reportedly been the most sought after by other clubs.

2011 NHL All-Star Fan Vote Includes Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews

The NHL has drastically changed the format for its All-Star Game this year, hoping to increase interest in the event, scheduled for Jan. 30 in Raleigh, N.C.

Tuesday, the league announced the six highest vote-getters in its annual All-Star Fan Balloting. The list is comprised of three forwards, two defensemen, and one goalie.

More than 14.3 million votes were cast, and it’s no surprise that Pittsburgh star Sidney Crosby was the top vote-getter, receiving over 600,000 votes. Joining him at forward is teammate Evgeni Malkin, who was third among forwards in voting. Chicago captain Jonathan Toews was second, more than 200,000 tallies behind Crosby.

Western Conference Race Off to Crazy Start

Things are starting to sort out a tiny bit in the Western Conference, but the left side of the country is still largely clumped. No one is entirely out of it. No one is ready to start unloading major parts.

“This conference is notoriously tight every year,” said longtime Dallas and now Chicago goaltender Marty Turco. “This year, it’s gone crazy. No one in is having a bad year, because there’s no separation.”

In the East, there is a division — the Atlantic — where the top team is 32 points ahead of the bottom. In the West, one division going into Thursday had a top-to-bottom difference of four points, the ultra-tight Pacific. The biggest cushion is in the Northwest division, where Vancouver enjoys an 11-point spread over last-place Edmonton. Considering that Vancouver is tied with Colorado at 38 points, the edge over the fifth-place team might not be quite so significant.

Botta’s NHL Notebook: 3 Jewels for the 2011 Draft, the League’s Best D

In 2011 Draft, Three Stand Alone

There are some NHL seasons when it has been wise to be the very worst of the worst teams. There are others, like last season, when — lottery be damned — finishing 29th or 30th in the league had its benefits (Taylor Hall and Tyler Seguin). In advance of the 2011 NHL Draft, it appears that if a struggling franchise wants to do itself and its fanbase a favor, ending up in the bottom three of the league standings is the way to go.

Ask almost any scout on makeshift press rows in European rinks and junior hockey barns across Canada, and there is a clear consensus. Teams in search of a top-shelf teenager to immediately improve their lineups will want to end up with one of the top three selections in the 2011 draft.

“I know it’s early,” a chief scout for a Western Conference team told NHL FanHouse. “But I really don’t see the group changing. The top three now — barring catastrophic injury — will probably be the top three next June.

Every Tuesday two of our hockey writers will discuss one topic: it’s the 2-on-1. This week, Adam Gretz and Bruce Ciskie start us off by discussing the defending Stanley Cup Champions and what sort of impact their decision to sign Marty Turco will have on this year’s roster.

2010-11 Chicago Blackhawks Preview: Rebuilding While Contending

There are many good reasons why it’s exceptionally tough to repeat as a champion in virtually any sport.

The nature of the Stanley Cup Playoffs — combined with the salary cap in the NHL — conspire to make it even harder in hockey. The Chicago Blackhawks learned that this summer, as close to a dozen players who were a part of their championship in June will be playing elsewhere to start the 2010-11 season.

Despite that high turnover, general manager Stan Bowman was able to keep his team’s core intact. Players like forwards Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, along with defensemen Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook return to aid Chicago’s title defense. There might be a mix of youngsters and strangers around them, but the team kept their unquestioned best players around, and that could be a huge deal going forward.

Brian Campbell Injury Might Mean Rookie Nick Leddy Makes Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks have gone through quite the overhaul during the offseason. The blue line was largely unaffected, though. Back are key players Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Brian Campbell, and Niklas Hjalmarsson. Only Brent Sopel departed.

However, the team suffered a blow on defense Saturday, when it was announced that Campbell would miss around a month with a bad knee.

Campbell was injured Friday on a hit by Pittsburgh forward Eric Tangradi. He is scheduled to have an MRI Sunday.

Duncan Keith’s Day at Wrigley

The Chicago Blackhawks have been celebrating nonstop since they won their first Stanley Cup in 47 years this past June. Patrick Kane has been up to lots of drunken debauchery, there was a bounty put out to help find the puck from Kane’s Cup winning goal and there was the obligatory Tonight Show visit, to name just a few of the festivities.

Sunday, a pair of Hawks continued the victory parade as Duncan Keith took the field at Wrigley to throw out the first pitch at the Cubs game. Later on, he was joined by teammate Dave Bolland in the press box for the traditional guest signing of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”
