Though the Regular Season Is Over, All-Star Season Is Only Beginning

Filed under:

Now that the college football season has finally declared a national champion — the Auburn Tigers, please take a bow — the focus for elite college seniors quickly shifts to their future. Many will be looking to boost their profiles for the NFL Draft in upcoming all-star games.

The East-West Shrine game, scheduled for Jan. 22 in Orlando, is the nation’s oldest All-Star game, played every year since 1925. It will be followed a week later by the more prestigious — at least in player name recognition — Under Armour Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., on Jan. 29.

Both are regarded as important interviews and auditions for players looking to impress.

Oklahoma vs. Connecticut: Fiesta Bowl

The 2011 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl features the No. 9 Oklahoma Sooners (11-2) against the No. 25 Connecticut Huskies (8-4) at 8:30 p.m. ET on Jan. 1, 2011.

It couldn’t pit more polar opposite programs.

UConn wasn’t even in Division I (now FBS) until 1997 and just joined the Big East in 2004. This is the Huskies’ first appearance in a BCS bowl. Oklahoma is playing in its eighth BCS bowl and has won seven national championships. The Sooners have been in operation at the highest collegiate level since 1895, meaning the program is over 100 years older than UConn’s. The Sooners have won 42 conference championships, while UConn won a share of its first Big East title this season.

But this game won’t be decided on history.

UConn comes in hot, having won five straight games after a sluggish 3-4 start.

If Randy Edsall’s Huskies can upset the Sooners, it will be on the legs of the Big East player of the year, running back Jordan Todman. The junior ran for 1,188 yards last season, but kicked things into high gear in 2010. Only twice did he not reach 100 yards in a game this season (80 and 93, respectively), garnering 1,574 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground — and he missed one game.

Oklahoma Stuns Oklahoma State, Forces Three-Way Tie Atop Big 12 South

Oklahoma Oklahoma State BedlamSTILLWATER, Okla. — The Oklahoma State Cowboys seemed to finally have all the intangibles stacked in their favor against rival Oklahoma in their annual Bedlam Series this season.

The 10th-ranked Cowboys had better talent, more momentum and their first trip to the Big 12 Championship Game in view, but in the end Saturday night was the same old story as No. 14 OU dashed their dreams with a 47-41 upset at Boone Pickens Stadium to earn its eighth straight victory in the series.

The Sooners (10-2, 6-2) win forces a three-way tie for first place in the Big 12 South with OSU (10-2, 6-2), and Texas A&M (9-3, 6-2) and it all but assured Oklahoma will head to the Big 12 Championship Game to face Nebraska by virtue of an expected better BCS ranking Sunday, according to the league’s tiebreaker rules.

But getting to this point Saturday was made interesting by a drama-filled fourth quarter in which both teams capitalized with big plays to make certain this would be a Bedlam Series game to be remembered. The Sooners appeared to seal the game when quarterback Landry Jones connected with receiver Cameron Kenney on an 86-yard pass play that put them ahead 40-31 with 3:03 remaining in the game.

On the ensuing kickoff, however, OSU returnman Justin Gilbert raced 89 yards for a touchdown to pull the Cowboys within 40-38 with 2:51 remaining.

Oklahoma Positions Itself for Division Title With Big Victory Over Baylor

WACO, Texas – On paper, Baylor‘s 53-24 loss to Oklahoma doesn’t look bad. OU outgained Baylor by just 101 yards and had only four more first downs than the Bears. The Sooners had control of the ball for less than a minute longer than Baylor (30:21 to 29:39).

Yes, it was a lopsided finish, but the outcome was made almost respectable by a couple of late Baylor touchdowns, scores that OU coach Bob Stoops called “cheap.”

Oklahoma’s hurry-up offense seemed to flummox the Bears early in the game. The Baylor defense was out of position on a couple of plays on the Sooners’ first drive, and the Bears picked up an illegal substation penalty trying to get their personnel set on another play.

OU, which now leads the all-time series against Baylor 20-0, was stuffed on that drive, however, when Gary Mason Jr. deflected and intercepted Landry Jones’ pass at the Baylor 40-yard line and returned it 21 yards to the OU 39. The return, though, was nullified by a personal foul call against the Bears. One step forward, two steps back. That might have been the story of the night for Baylor.

Oklahoma Destroys Baylor in Waco

WACO, Texas – DeMarco Murray’s two first-quarter touchdowns gave Oklahoma the early lead, and the Sooners rolled from there, beating Baylor 53-24 in the Bears’ final game of the season. Oklahoma (9-2, 5-2 in the Big 12) will play Oklahoma State next Saturday. While Baylor wraps up its season with a bowl-eligible record of 7-5 (and 4-4 in conference play), it remains to be seen if the Bears will receive a postseason invitation.

Oklahoma went up 21-0 on an eight-yard TD by Roy Finch with 1:22 to play in the first quarter. The Sooners were set up when Baylor’s Krys Buerck muffed a punt that was recovered by OU’s Joseph Ibiloye.

Baylor’s first points came on the third play of the second quarter when Robert Griffin connected with Brad Taylor for a 12-yard score after Jay Finley’s 50-yard run to the OU 23.

A pair of field goals helped Oklahoma to a 34-7 lead at the half. After the break, the Sooners wasted little time in continuing their domination. With Baylor facing a second-and-15 at its own 10, Ronnell Lewis intercepted Griffin and returned the pick 12 yards for an easy score.

Big 12 Report: Justin Blackmon Becomes Big-Play Threat at Oklahoma State

It came without much notice. But this past offseason, Oklahoma State receiver Justin Blackmon began to work a little harder during conditioning drills.

He then pushed himself during spring ball and even into fall camp maybe just a little more than the other Cowboys receivers did. The motivation that was out there was a chance to step into the spotlight in a new offense that is a receiver’s dream.

“I just knew it was going to be an opportunity,” Blackmon said. “We really didn’t have a solid go-to receiver so it was going to be open. I also knew it was going to be a lot of opportunities to make plays with the new offense we’ve got in this year.”

Oklahoma Celebrates After Another ‘Not Over Til It’s Over’ Victory

DALLAS – Standing on the Cotton Bowl logo at midfield, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops posed for photos with his family. Over on the 20-yard line, Oklahoma center Eric Mensik hoisted a young boy above his head and twirled him around. Oklahoma’s Travis Lewis romped through the end zone wearing the Golden Hat trophy. On the sideline, former Oklahoma great Adrian Peterson took it all in and smiled.

Just another Big 12 Conference victory for the eighth-ranked Sooners, right? Not quite. This was against Texas. And, in what’s become routine for Oklahoma this season, it literally wasn’t over until it was over. Not until Texas’ Aaron Williams fumbled a punt return, allowing Oklahoma to run out the final 62 seconds.

Oklahoma 28, Texas 20.

“It’s been a long time since we won one of these and being a senior it means so much more because I won’t get another chance at this,” Mensik told FanHouse. “It means a lot. This rivalry is so prominent, so strong. It’s always fun to play in.

“It’s something else. I’m going to remember this for the rest of my life.”

Oklahoma Takes Advantage of Mistakes by Texas in Red River Rivalry

DALLAS — For a moment there late in the fourth quarter Saturday, time seemed to stop as the football lay on the turf at the Cotton Bowl after Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones fumbled it on the run.

With the Texas Longhorns trailing by eight points and time running out, the Longhorns wanted somebody — anybody — to just fall on the ball as it lay still near the OU six yard line. UT coach Mack Brown, however, had grander thoughts as middle linebacker Jared Norton hovered near the ball just before Jones reached out and, with just enough force, shoved the football out of bounds with a little over a minute to play.

“I actually thought — I’m not sure whether it was Emmanuel (Acho) or Jared — I thought we were going to pick it up and run it back in for the touchdown,” Brown said. “I was just thinking about the two-point play very honestly. Then it just kind of sat there and sat there and rolled and, like the rest of the day, it rolled out of bounds.”
