Charley Rosen: NBA’s Most Over/Underrated

Overrated

LeBron James heads the list because despite his gargantuan numbers he still has to prove that he’s not a quitter (remember the concluding two games of last season’s Celtics-Cavs series?) and not a loser. Moreover, although he’s become celebrated for running down and blocking breakaways, his posture is still too upright for him to play adequate defense against quick-footed opponents.

Vince Carter also habitually posts gaudy numbers but has been a choker throughout his career.

Dwight Howard is a good defensive helper, but only when a savvy offense hasn’t sucked him out of position. At the same time, he’s unable to adequately defend opposing big men who can turn-face-and-go. Plus, instead of elevating his own performance he’d rather whine in public about his teammates’ shortcomings.

Kenyon Martin has a big mouth and a small game.

Danilo Gallinari is a streaky shooter with a questionable handle and slow-footed defense. If he played anywhere else but New York he’d never be touted as a future superstar.

Stephen Jackson can’t differentiate between a shot and a bad shot.

Ray Allen Still Rolling After All These Years

Filed under:

Ray Allen doesn’t hesitate to reveal some secrets of his longevity to younger teammates. So at a Halloween party last month at Allen’s house, the Boston guard took Delonte West into his garage.

There he showed off his $10,000 bike. It’s a recent investment to help keep Allen, 35, in great shape.

“I’m learning a lot from him just in the short time (of being in Boston after signing in September) in how he takes care of his body,” said West, 27, who figures to get even more tips from Allen after he was lost for several months Wednesday with a broken right wrist. “Not that many people invest that much money on a bike to ride. It’s like something Lance Armstrong would ride. But that’s what you do when you want to become the ultimate pro, you invest to keep yourself in top shape.”

Allen has been riding for about a dozen years and had the same bike. But earlier this year he upgraded to a bike designed specifically for him.

“I’d been looking to get a new one so I used this company out of Boston, Independent Fabrication,” Allen said in an interview with FanHouse. “I wanted something ultralight, and I just went to a bike shop to figure out what’s new and what’s out there. We put together a bike based on my specifications. It’s like one of those bikes you can pick up with two fingers. It’s just real light.”

Delonte West, Celtics Guard, Breaks Wrist

Delonte West clutches wristCeltics guard Delonte West broke his right wrist after a nasty fall during the second quarter of Wednesday night’s game against the Nets.

West tumbled to the floor of the TD Banknorth Garden after completing a layup over New Jersey forward Travis Outlaw with 2:48 remaining in the first half. He stayed there until he was assisted by Celtics medical personnel and soon after departed to the locker room still in obvious pain.

West had recently returned from a 10-game suspension after he pleaded guilty to gun charges over the summer. The suspension didn’t deter the Celtics from signing him, and he was providing key depth with usual point guard Rajon Rando sidelined the last three games because of a hamstring injury.

The Works: Here Lies Allen Iverson; Rookie Crystal Ball

In The Works today: we predict where rookies will be in 10 years and determine who can learn from Delonte West. But first, Allen Iverson’s sad story becomes more bleak.

The Man Who Wasn’t King

Allen IversonAllen Iverson is bonkin’ it up in Turkey, in a second-tier league, and he’s likely broke. This is how it ends?

Whether or not you like to admit, once upon a time Allen Iverson was the NBA. When Jordan was gone for the second time, and Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant popular but hollow, it was Iverson who filled the void. He was a polarizing figure, an icon for a generation and, for a few that came before, proof that the sport was doomed.

On his best days, he was positively electric, and won games, too. On the bad ones, well, he had the swagger and personality to slough it off — only making it worse for those already inclined to screw up their faces at them.

But enough about me. Iverson didn’t prove the doubters wrong when he tried to stick in Memphis; failed utterly in his return to Philly; and now, isn’t even able to play prodigal son, or the sad-sack has-been reaping the spoils of foreign shores. Plenty of lesser men have been able to, in far better leagues. Why not Allen Iverson? At this point, it’s impossible to say. We have no way of knowing if this will last. But given the slow, painful decline that he’s been in since leaving Denver, it’s hard to think anything good is going to come out of this international move — it seems like the last stop, the final straw, and any other metaphor of doom you care to call on.

Much-Maligned Delonte West Realizes He’s a Role Model

ATLANTA — Not only does Delonte West not want to be like Charles Barkley when it comes to retiring without a title ring, he won’t be taking any similar stances about not being a role model.

The Boston guard recently returned from a 10-day NBA suspension to start the season due a September 2009 incident in which he pleaded guilty to carrying three guns and two knives while on motorcycle outside Washington D.C.

What West said has been reinforced is that he needs to serve as a better example.

“I’m a role model, and I’m put in this position because of my talents to where other people’s children out there look up to us,” West said in an interview with FanHouse before Boston’s 99-76 rout of Atlanta on Monday night at Philips Arena. “We got to make sure that we keep that in perspective. It’s not about us. And bad decisions grownups should frown upon because their kids watch. I’m just trying to make better decisions, really.”

Still, West has found his name linked to negative situations since then. Just last month, West got into a locker-room fight at practice with teammate Von Wafer, an incident Boston coach Doc Rivers called a “bad day.” And there were rumors that with Cleveland late last season West had an intimate relationship with Gloria James, the mother of star LeBron James, who soon bolted from the Cavaliers to Miami as a free agent.

Delonte West Completes Suspension, Eager to Help Celtics

Delonte WestDelonte West is ready to turn off the television and lace up his sneakers.

Suspended by the NBA for the first 10 games of the season, West was allowed to play in the preseason and practice with the Boston Celtics but was forbidden from being in the arena during regular-season games. As such, he watched from his couch as his new teammates opened the season.

“I was like a fan,” he said, according to NESN.com. “I was cheering, annoying my neighbors, banging on the walls a few times.”

“This team is fun to watch,” he added. “I find myself just as a fan of the game, rooting for my guys, cheering, calling everybody I know, saying, ‘The game is on! We’ve got to watch the Celtics!’ It’s great, and it’s even better that I see those guys on TV and I can think to myself, ‘I’m a part of that.’ And then I come in for practice and I see these guys, and it makes me appreciate being in the NBA all over again.”

Delonte West, Von Wafer Reportedly Exchange Punches After Practice

Filed under:

The Celtics took a bit of a risk when they decided to bring Delonte West back to the team for a second tour of duty this season. Besides the fact that West wouldn’t even be able to play during the first 10 games of the season due to a league suspension for pleading guilty to multiple weapon charges in July, there was the possibility that West’s emotional state could randomly force him to miss time, as it did with the Cavaliers last season.

West’s emotions got the better of him at Celtics’ practice on Friday when he reportedly got into a physical altercation with teammate Von Wafer in the locker room after practice. According to the report from Hoopsworld, the problems began during the practice session, with West getting so physical with Wafer in a three-on-three game that Wafer left midway through and headed to the locker room.

West approached Wafer from behind as Wafer sat at his locker and threw the first punch, with Wafer quickly responding by connecting two blows of his own before the two wrestled to the ground and had to be separated.

Delonte West Denies Tryst with LeBron James’ Mother

Delonte WestDelonte West, whose alleged relationship with LeBron James‘ mother has been the subject of rumors for months, was asked about the whispers at Boston Celtics media day on Monday.

“Not at all,” West told reporters. “I come from an era where you don’t say nothing bad about someone’s parent, so not at all.”

The question, asked by a reporter from a radio station, came as a Celtics official did his best to intercept the question, The Boston Globe reported.

West signed a non-guaranteed contract with the Celtics this offseason after he was cut by Minnesota, which had acquired West from Cleveland. He will be forced to serve a 10-game suspension to open the season after he pleaded guilty for carrying two loaded handguns, a loaded shotgun and two knives when he was pulled over in suburban Washington D.C. last September.

The Works: Invisible Danny Granger and the Celtics’ Psych Ward

Today in The Works, we wonder how all those high-maintenance Celtics manage to get along, provide reassurance for fans of Canadian basketball and delve into why NBA Muslims fast during Ramadan while those at FIBA are not.

But first, a Pacers star’s weird entrance into the public arena.

Danny GrangerGive Granger Some: Danny Granger called Europe, and Europeans, stinky. It was such big news that it crashed through the glass ceiling that usually hinders small market stars and ended up on Huffington Post.

This might be the most famous Granger has ever been; when the Pacers traded for Darren Collison, few bothered to note that a versatile, skilled All-Star forward in his prime suddenly had a potential stud to set him up.

Wednesday, Kelly Dwyer asked if the problem with Indiana wasn’t one of perception. Namely, that its fans, and to some degree all of us, simply refuse to accept incremental progress — ever since a legit contender came unraveled in the wake of the Brawl. Landing Collison was enormous for Granger, and Larry Bird’s job security. Brandon Rush‘s drug suspension, which brings back memories of those old evil Pacers and proves that Bird is failing, resonates more. It’s more familiar, less work, and less of a risk than realizing that this team isn’t there yet, but it’s closer than you think.

Delonte West, Shaquille O’Neal Risky Chemistry Moves for Celtics

It’s going to take a chemist, and not just a coach, to lead the Boston Celtics this season.

Things just got more complicated for Doc Rivers.

The Celtics improved their talent level this summer by first adding Shaquille O’Neal and now Delonte West, but they also dove into some risky territory with two potentially divisive players who could change the locker room makeup.

If chemistry really is such a big part of the success or failure of a team, like so many coaches say, then the Celtics admittedly are taking a chance.

It could win them another championship. Or it could destroy what they have.

“Chemistry is a delicate thing. I understand that, and I’m as cautious as anyone with it. I guarantee you, I’ll be keeping my eye on it,” Rivers told FanHouse Wednesday evening, confirming the Celtics’ addition of West earlier in the day. “I don’t know yet if we can make it work. It is going to be interesting, that’s for sure.”
