Ohio State vs. Arkansas: Sugar Bowl 2011

Sugar BowlThe No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes (11-1) square off against the No. 8 Arkansas Razorbacks (10-2) in the 2011 Allstate Sugar Bowl Tuesday, Jan. 4 at 8:30 p.m. ET in New Orleans. The game will be televised on ESPN.

Ohio State comes in saddled with two major, negative storylines. First of all, there are the five players who have been suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season, but will be allowed to take part in the game. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor, running back Daniel Herron, wide receiver DeVier Posey, offensive lineman Mike Adams and defensive end Solomon Thomas were suspended for trading rings, jerseys and other items in return for tattoos. The five are being allowed to play in the game by coach Jim Tressel.

The other storyline is the entire conference of the SEC — from which Arkansas hails. The Buckeyes are 0-9 all time in bowls from the SEC and 0-3 in Tressel’s tenure (including two losses in the BCS Championship). Ohio State may feel additional pressure as the Big Ten went 0-3 against the SEC on New Year’s Day, including two blowouts.

Arkansas enters the game with a contrast on nearly all fronts, other than having won at least 10 games this season. The Razorbacks have never played in a BCS game — the school has appeared in the Sugar Bowl five times, but none in the BCS era — and have nearly no off-field drama.

Poor Terrelle Pryor and Ohio State

Terrelle Pryor’s sure put himself into a nice pickle.

The guy who isn’t ready for the NFL now may have to go the NFL. Either that or he sits out the first five games of the 2011 season courtesy of an NCAA suspension for benefiting from selling items he earned while benefiting The Ohio State University.

Rest assured, though, it’s not Pryor’s fault. Not his fault whatsoever. He didn’t know he couldn’t sell his paraphernalia, ranging from a Big Ten championship ring to a trinket of gold pants given by the University for beating Michigan. He sold them, you see, for the most noble of causes: to help his family.

That’s the word from Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith, who also lavished gushing praise on Ohio State’s compliance department as it saw its marquee player given the NCAA hammer. It was only on “this particular bylaw” — which in NCAA vernacular probably is Bylaw 9, Paragraph 12, Subset 4, Provision 5.2 — that the university did not give enough information. For all the other 783,209 bylaws, Ohio State was spot on.

Seriously.

“For everything else we were top of the charts,” Smith said. “This one, we did not do as good a job.”

And Santa will have absolutely no problem getting into all those chimneys from Zagreb to Zambia.

Buckeyes Much More Than Terrelle Pryor in Blowout Victory

Brandon SaineFirst things first. Yes, Ohio State was playing a veritable preseason game in a 45-7 thrashing of Marshall. It wasn’t a real test at all for the No. 2 Buckeyes, especially as they look to host the Miami Hurricanes next week in the Horseshoe.

Still, when we see an actual football game played by one of the best teams in the country, it’s certainly worth drawing conclusions. And I’ll gladly throw this one out there: while Heisman hype machine Terrelle Pryor was good, he wasn’t nearly as good as the defense or running game of Ohio State.

There’s no need to jump to Pryor’s defense, as he was quite good. Great, in fact. The touted junior was a cool customer in the pocket, hitting on 17-of-25 passes for 247 yards and three touchdowns — most impressive was a perfect strike on a 65-yard touchdown to Dane Sanzenbacher to quickly answer the Thundering Herd’s only score. Entering the season, the detractors of Pryor’s would point to his inability to be a pocket passer. So if this game is any indication, he’s made huge strides (he only carried the ball eight times for 17 yards).

But, again, Pryor was not the best thing about his team on Thursday night. And Buckeye faithful likely agree with this sentiment. This is one complete football team.
