A Plus-One Playoff Is Unlikely

NEW YORK – While Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany admits they’re losing the “PR war” with supporters for a college football playoff, Delany and the other automatic-qualifying BCS commissioners haven’t softened their stance against a playoff.

In fact, the automatic-qualifying BCS commissioners say they’re less likely now to be in favor of a “Plus One” model for fear that would ultimately lead to a full-blown, 16-team playoff.

“We’re not winning the PR war,” Delany said. “There are good arguments on the other side, (they’ve) adopted many more fans and more media than our argument, but we do have a great regular season, a great bowl season and the 1-2 (BCS title) game.

“But it’s not perfect. We don’t have an NFL style or college basketball style playoff. I get that people want it. I’m not looking to lead the parade, just looking to answer the question.”

Added NCAA president Mark Emmert about a college football playoff: “That’s not a train I’m driving.”

No Trophy for Nebraska as Feud With Big 12 Conference Furthered

Bo PeliniThe ongoing, albeit subtle in a way, feud between the Big 12 and soon-to-be-departed Nebraska added another layer Friday. The Huskers blew away Colorado, 45-17, to win the Big 12 North, though the team was not presented the trophy by a conference representative as is usually the custom.

To hear it from many Cornhuskers fans, the Big 12 is just blatantly slapping Nebraska in the face because commissioner Dan Beebe and the conference are bitter Nebraska is leaving next season for the Big Ten. Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne got a different story.

“They didn’t think it would be safe to send somebody up,” Osborne said, referencing “nasty” e-mails the Big 12 said it had received from Huskers fans. “That’s the word I got.”

Bo Pelini’s Huskers moved to 10-2 (6-2 in Big 12) after dominating also-departing Colorado (which will be in the Pac-12 next year). Nebraska will likely face the winner of the Oklahoma-Oklahoma State game next Saturday — though it’s possible Texas A&M could sneak in there, the Aggies are a longshot to win the tiebreaker, which is the team with the highest spot in the BCS rankings.

In fairness to the Big 12, the trophy could still be delivered quite soon.

Big 12 Report: League Motivated to Separate From Colorado, Nebraska

Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe had dealt with the anguish and disappointment of losing two conference members months ago.

Beebe and the remaining 10 members were just anxious to move on, therefore a financial deal was struck Tuesday that allows both Nebraska and Colorado to move to their new conferences for considerably less in penalties than the Big 12 might have won in court.

The Big 12 will hold back a total of $16.1 million in distributions Colorado and Nebraska would have received, which is far smaller than the $30 million the conference could have received because neither school gave the stipulated two-year notice of withdrawal. Nebraska had long said it would move on to the Big Ten after this year, but it appeared finances might force Colorado to stick around for two years instead of joining the Pac-10 in 2011.

Neither side wanted that, especially the Big 12 which would have had to deal with the nuance of an 11-team schedule in football and the rest of the sports for one year.

“It just gave you a delayed effect in terms of what our real future is going to be,” Beebe said during a teleconference late Tuesday night. “Colorado had the motivation to move on, the Pac-10 had the motivation to move on. You don’t want to continue to have an institution that is leaving sit in the conference for a couple of years. They don’t want it, you don’t want it.

Big 12, Nebraska Strike Separation Deal

After months of negotiations, the Big 12 and Nebraska announced Tuesday they have reached a separation agreement. The charter member will withdraw from the conference effective June 30, 2011 to join the Big Ten.

The Big 12 will withhold $9.255 million from the revenues that would normally be distributed to Nebraska. But the Cornhuskers could receive an additional $500,000 if it is one of two Big 12 teams to play in a BCS game this postseason. Colorado and the Big 12 also reached an agreement later Tuesday that will allow the Buffaloes to exit the conference for the Pac-10 after this academic year in exchange for Colorado forfeiting its $6,863,000 conference distribution this year.

The deal between the Big 12 and Nebraska remains subject to final approval from the member schools’ respective governing boards.

“This agreement was accomplished through a collegial, respectful process among the conference, its institutions, and the University of Nebraska that led to a resolution that all parties believe is fair,” said Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe. “I appreciate the cooperation of Chancellor Harvey Perlman and Nebraska staff. The Big 12 has enjoyed its relationship with Nebraska and wishes it well in the future.”

Colorado Completes Deal to Leave Big 12, Enter Pac-10 Next Fall

The Pac-10 will be the Pac-12 next fall after all.

Colorado has reached a deal to leave the Big 12 after the 2010-11 season and join the Pac-10, effective June 30, 2011. The conference will withhold $6,863,000 from Colorado in revenues that would otherwise be distributed to the school.

With the addition of Utah, that brings the Pac-10 to a 12-team league for the 2011 football season.

The deal was announced Tuesday evening after the Colorado Board of Regents approved the agreement.

In a press release, Big 12 Conference commissioner Dan Beebe stated, “This agreement was accomplished through a collegial, respectful process among the Conference, its institutions, and the University of Colorado that led to a resolution that all parties believe is fair. I appreciate the cooperation of Chancellor Phil DiStefano and others at Colorado. The Big 12 has enjoyed its relationship with CU and wishes it well in the future.”

Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott said the conference is “excited” to have Colorado on board.

“Our plans all along were for them to join the Conference in 2012, so this puts the Pac-12 ahead of schedule, which is great news,” Scott said. “With Colorado and Utah coming on board next year we are tremendously excited about the future of the Conference.”

Back on Sept. 11, Scott said there was less than a 50-50 chance that Colorado would be able to extricate itself from the Big 12 in time to start next season, citing “financial” reasons.

The Pac-10 will be helping to pick up Colorado’s tab with the Big 12.

A Colorado press release indicated that the move will be funded “through Pacific-10 Conference distribution, increased ticket revenue associated with Pac-10 home schedules and through other intercollegiate athletic department operating efficiencies and revenues.”

Big 12 Optimistically Moving Toward Uncertain Future

Dan BeebeDALLAS — With his league all but crumbling around him, Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe managed last month what could become the greatest save in college sports.

Colorado and Nebraska had already broken away from the 14-year-old power conference and now the nucleus was next as Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Texas Tech all weighed options from the Pac-10. The formation of four 16-team super-conferences seemed inevitable with the anticipated move.

But Beebe came through with the ultimate Hail Mary catch that included increased television revenue and more for the major league players despite two fewer teams and the almost certain loss of the Big 12 Football Championship Game.

Beebe, himself, described the scenario as being down 21 points in the fourth quarter with four minutes remaining.

Kansas Athletic Director Says Big 12 Members Commit to 10 years

Now that the Big 12 has staved off the Pac-10 and SEC, how long is the league committed to remain together? According to Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins, at least 10 years and likely much longer.

“We all signed an agreement that we’d be here 10 years and if some things happen — and I think they will happen, I prefer not go into it until it does — if some other things happen, it could be longer,” Perkins said. “Right now my understanding is it’s 10 years.”

The Big 12 would not comment Thursday on the league’s 10-year commitment that Perkins mentioned during his Wednesday news conference in Lawrence, Kan.

Perkins, who announced recently he’s retiring next September, went on to say he believes the Big 12 will remain together for a long time.

Big East Commissioner John Marinatto Thanks Big 12 With Roses

Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe said during Tuesday’s teleconference discussing how his league remained together that “a lot of people thought it wouldn’t be good for college athletics if the Big 12 no longer existed.”

No one probably felt stronger about that statement more than Big East commissioner John Marinatto.

If the Big 12 had folded, the Big East may have soon followed in a domino effect of teams leaving for superconferences that would have changed the college landscape forever. A college landscape that may not have included the Big East.

In the End, Texas Decides There’s No Place Like Home

AUSTIN, Texas — Leaders of the University of Texas peered into what would have been the brand new frontier of college athletics and seemed quite fascinated with the possibilities.

But Texas decided Monday to remain with what was familiar and that is Big 12 Conference. The school turned down an offer to join the Pac-10 and become the critical piece of the first 16-school mega conference. UT officials held a press conference Tuesday on campus to announce their decision, which likely saved the Big 12 from dissolution.

The one-time 12-member conference will make it a go with 10 members after Colorado and Nebraska broke ranks last week. Colorado went to the Pac-10, Nebraska to the Big Ten.

Dan Beebe: Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma Will Get Bigger Slice of Exit Money

Big 12 Conference commissioner Dan Beebe said during a Tuesday teleconference all it took to get his remaining league members to declare their intentions to staying in the league was a “public, unequivocal commitment” indicating so.

And, oh yeah: five of the programs that would have been left behind also said they would guarantee that Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma would receive a greater percentage of the exit fee money that Nebraska and Colorado will be required to pay for leaving for the Big Ten and Pac-10, respectively.

“The five institutions [Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Iowa State and Baylor] that weren’t being pursued as dramatically as, at least, Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma, those five institutions were looking at a possibility of very difficult future, even if they repopulated the Big 12 — in terms of their future media value looking at significantly less revenue,” Beebe said. “They came together … [the future] didn’t look very good without Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma.

“Those five decided as they looked at their future media value and were willing, if necessary, to use some of the distribution [money] that they get from the departing members to make sure Texas A&M, Texas and Oklahoma were induced to stay with them and stay in the conference.”

A Big 12 official said that Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma have not accepted any offer for exit fee revenue and no formal plan has been proposed.
