Oregon State Makes Early Surge in Pac-10

Craig RobinsonHow did Oregon State, the only team in the Pac-10 with a losing record coming out of non-conference play, turn into the toast of the conference so quickly?

Beating Arizona and ending up on SportsCenter will do it.

The Beavers, who take to the road Thursday night against Washington State and then face league-favorite Washington Saturday, made a statement about their rapid improvement in beating the Wildcats 76-75 at Gil Coliseum.

Another big weekend and they’ll go from a statement to an exclamation. But a two-game set against the Cougars and the Huskies, two of the best teams in the conference, could also be a quick come-down.

Still, the team picked to finish eighth in the Pac-10 is 2-0 to open conference play for the first time since 2004-05 and for only the second time since 1992-93. The Beavers, who have won three in a row, were 4-6 before heading into their winning stretch.

“I think when you lose you start playing better because you get to the point where you don’t want to lose anymore,” said Oregon State coach Craig Robinson. “And that’s a testament to where these guys have come from. Because when I first got here, they were used to losing. And now they’ve gotten to the point where they don’t want any part of losing.”

After 18 Months, Roberto Nelson Finally Eligible for Oregon State

The Oregon State Beavers have not had a lot of good news over the last couple of years. After a 14-18 season a year ago, Craig Robinson’s team has started out 3-4, well on their way to another losing record.

But things are about to turn. A little bit, at least.

Roberto Nelson, a highly sought recruit in the class of 2009, will be suiting up for the first time in his career Sunday after an eighteen month eligibility battle with the NCAA. The redshirt freshman from Santa Barbara was a top 20 shooting guard in the class of 2009, but a set of unsavory circumstances guided him to Oregon State.

In his senior year of high school, his father was sent to prison and Nelson’s grades slipped. Then, after being courted by Arizona, UCLA, and a host of others, Robinson sat down with Nelson for a brief visit, one that the Oregon State coach assumed to be pointless.

“I told my staff, ‘we’re not going to get him.’ He’s way too good,” Robinson told The Oregonian. “I thought somebody like UCLA or USC or Arizona would come in and woo him and then that would be it.”

Instead, Nelson was impressed with the way in which Robinson approached him, and he became a Beaver. On Sunday, Nelson will suit up to play for the first time as a collegiate athlete.

There are some lofty expectations being laid on Nelson, including the obligatory comparison to Gary Payton, who played for the Beavers in the 80s. Nelson has been described as a guy that can score in bunches, which is perfect, because Oregon State could use some extra points.

Texas-Pan American (3-8) will visit Corvallis Sunday in Nelson’s career debut.

Oregon State to Wear Turquoise Jerseys to Honor Native American Culture

Filed under:

The state of Oregon has been somewhat, oh, avant garde, in its uniforms. The usual culprit has been the University of Oregon’s football team, from its white-flame helmets to its tire-tread shoulders and colors that are the sort of thing you might expect out of a highlighter.

This time, it’s Oregon State going fashion forward, and doing so for a good cause.

The Beavers will wear turquoise uniforms next Sunday as they play Texas Southern in the Nike N7 game. N7 is an arm of the footwear giant designed to help Native American communities improve access to sports.

Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson told The Oregonian that he had been looking for a cause for the team to support and felt the tie-in with Native American made sense because of his experience recruiting Joe Burton, a sophomore of the Soboba Tribe.

Turquoise is a symbol of friendship among Native Americans.

Pac-10 Basketball Preview: Huskies Lead League Back to Respectability

The Pac-10 is a proud basketball conference. But powerful? That’s a different matter.

After the worst year in memory, the Pac-10 is looking for a big bounce-back. But a medium-sized bounce might be more like it.
This isn’t yet a great conference again. Too much youth with only 17 seniors in the whole conference. Too many teams with too many question marks.

Washington is the clear-cut favorite, talented and experienced. But everybody else has something to prove and in some cases, a multitude of things.

UCLA and Arizona, for example, are still putting things back together after being left out of the NCAA brackets last year. At at this point, they presumably are playing for second along with Washington State and Arizona State.

When the Bruins and the Wildcats were left out of the NCAA tournament field last spring, it was practically college basketball blasphemy.

Summer Session: Pac-10 Slogan, ‘It Has to Be Better’

It Has to Be Better. That probably isn’t the slogan that Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott would want to attach to the men’s basketball season, but it’s the prevailing sentiment as the conference’s 10 teams begin organized workouts on Sept. 15.

A conference with history and pride and tradition barely got two teams in to the NCAA field last spring, and the prospects for drastic improvement just aren’t that good.

Washington, which reached the Sweet 16 last March, is the only team in the conference that has been ranked by the preseason magazines and that qualifies the Huskies as overwhelming favorites.

UCLA, which finished below .500 for the first time since 2004, and Arizona are expected to be better, expected to return to their rightful places in the field of 68 come March.

But beyond that, there’s only a lot question marks.
