Carl Edwards Grabs Pole for Phoenix Race

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Phoenix International Raceway is filled with bumps and cracks and has patches on top of patches trying to hold it together for one last race.

It may be falling apart, but one thing it has never lost is speed.

Carl Edwards had the fastest lap on one of the fastest days ever at Phoenix, setting the last in a slew of track records on Saturday during the final qualifying session before the surface undergoes a makeover.

“This track is great,” Edwards said. “I talked to (track president Bryan) Sperber earlier and I think the question I asked him seems a lot of people have asked was: ‘Why would you even mess with this?”

Raceway officials don’t have a lot of choice with the track nearly crumbling.

It’s at least going out with flourish.

2010 Team Reviews: Roush Fenway Racing Charts Upward Trend

Roush Fenway Racing, coming off a 2009 season that started with a bang after Matt Kenseth‘s Daytona 500 win and ended with the thud of being largely uncompetitive, moved in the right direction again in 2010.

Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth all raced their way into the Chase for the Sprint Cup field this time around, a nice turnaround after the former champ Kenseth failed to secure a spot in last year’s championship battle. David Ragan, however, continued down the same path of his dismal 2009 season.

The team reeled off three wins in the 2010 campaign, but most notably finished it on quite a high note with Edwards’ end-of-the-season dominance as Jimmie Johnson strutted to the Sprint Cup title.

Outside of the stats, Edwards also made it an interesting year for the Roush-Fenway public relations department with his on-track actions, particularly with Brad Keselowski.

But no one was involved in more dramatics than team co-owner Jack Roush himself, who survived his second plane crash when he crash-landed his jet while trying to touch down at Oshkosh, Wis., in July. The crash cost Roush the sight in his left eye, among other non-permanent injuries.

4th – Carl Edwards [2 wins, 9 Top-5s, 19 Top-10s, 2 DNFs, 11.8 Avg. Finish]

The Carl Edwards roller coaster — a ride that featured a loop around the 2007 Chase and a near-miss at dethroning Jimmie Johnson and then a steep drop into a mediocre 2009 season — started back up the next hill in 2010, complete with some jaw-dropping bumps along the way.

The most obvious reflection on 2010 for Edwards was his late-season performance that netted him wins in the season’s final two races. They were the culmination of the steady progress Edwards started to most noticeably show in mid-summer races. After his long drought, winning 2010′s final two races had to leave Edwards and No. 99 team feeling good headed to Daytona Beach in February.

Carl Edwards Hangs On to Win Fuel Mileage Race in Phoenix

Carl Edwards ended a streak of futility stretching back 70 races and almost two years with a fuel-stretching victory Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway in the penultimate Sprint Cup race of the 2010 season.

Although Denny Hamlin dominated the race, Edwards, who started from the pole, came on at the end and took the lead with 47 laps to go. He then managed to conserve enough fuel to make it to the end when the race went green through the final laps.

“Boys, that’s the way to end the streak right there,” Edwards shouted on his radio after taking the checkered flag. “Wooooh! All right! We won!”

The victory capped off a winning weekend for Edwards, who also captured the Nationwide race at Phoenix on Saturday.

“Man, this is unreal,” Edwards said in victory lane. “This Ford Fusion gets great fuel mileage, I can tell you that. I forgot what it was like to win a fuel mileage race except that feeling of the pit in your stomach during the last two laps.

Carl Edwards Runs Away With Phoenix NASCAR Race

Carl Edwards ran like Kyle Busch usually does, and Busch ran into some uncommon trouble, as Edwards romped to victory after dominating the NASCAR Nationwide series race at Phoenix International Raceway Saturday.

Edwards beat Kevin Harvick by 5.2 seconds after thoroughly dominating the race, leading 153 of the 200 laps.

It was Edwards’ second consecutive victory in the Nationwide series, his third of the year and the 28th of his Nationwide career.

“Awesome, awesome car, guys,” Edwards told veteran crew chief Mike Beam and the rest of the team on the radio after taking the checkered flag. “That’s the best car I’ve ever had in the Nationwide series.”

Joey Logano finished third, followed by 2010 Nationwide champion Brad Keselowski and Reed Sorenson. Danica Patrick finished 32nd after an eventful day of beating and banging with other cars.

Busch finished 16th after being forced to make an unscheduled pit stop late in the race with a deflating tire.

“That was the best race car I’ve ever had,” Edwards reiterated after the race.”That’s is. That car is so easy to drive and so fast through the corners, I’m just very, very lucky to be driving it. Everything was good. That’s a really, really good race car.”

Roush-Fenway Drivers Coming Up Short Again in Chase

A year ago, two drivers of the Roush-Fenway Racing team found their way to NASCAR‘s illustrious Chase for the Sprint Cup.

They finished rather unspectacularly.

Greg Biffle held the banner highest for the proud Ford operation, winding up seventh after the season’s final race at Homestead-Miami Speedway last November. His teammate, Carl Edwards, finished eleventh.

Neither garnered a win during that 2009 campaign — one that seemed to start in quite the fashion with Matt Kenseth‘s sweep of the season’s first two races, including the Daytona 500.

Fortunes seemed to be in the organization’s favor this season after all three of those drivers — Biffle, Edwards and Kenseth — made it into the top 12 at the Chase cutoff point in September.

Carl Edwards Wins Pole for NASCAR Richmond Race

RICHMOND, Va. — Carl Edwards nudged Juan Pablo Montoya off the pole late in qualifying Friday afternoon to earn the top starting position for NASCAR‘s final race to set the Chase for the Championship field.

Edwards paced the field with a lap of 127.762 miles per hour. Montoya was a fraction slower at 127.455 mph.

A.J. Allmendinger qualified third for Saturday’s Air Guard 400 at Richmond International Raceway. Clint Bowyer and David Reutimann rounded out the top-five and it was a particularly encouraging start for Bowyer, who paced the practice sessions and is trying to hold on to the 12th and final position in the points standings.

Edwards, who was fastest in the final practice, continues a torrid summer pace. He has outproduced all the other drivers in points during the last month and has only one finish outside the top-10 since June. He and Montoya also paced the field for the Aug. 8 road course race in Watkins Glen, N.Y.

“That lap Juan did, I didn’t think there was any way we’d be close to that,” said Edwards, who drives the No. 99 Kellogg’s Ford for Roush Fenway Racing. “It was a pretty amazing job my guys did with the car. There were a lot of Fords up there and I think that’s a testament to the guys at the shop. It was a really great lap for us.”

Spotter’s Stand: Carl Edwards Races Into Sprint Cup Contention

Carl Edwards is flying under the championship radar no more.

After a second-place finish in Sunday night’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Edwards let everyone he’s going to contend in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

“I know we don’t look like we did in 2008,” Edwards said, alluding to the most recent season he had a shot at winning the series title. “But we’re better set to go race for that championship now than we’ve ever been.”

Edwards, long a cerebral force in the garage area with an unvarnished penchant to march to his own beat, isn’t pulling anybody’s leg with that declaration.

In the last eight races, Edwards and his Roush-Fenway Racing No. 99 Ford team have turned the corner and then some in favor of being competitive again.

That span — beginning at Daytona in July — has seen Edwards finish in the top five five times. More significantly, he’s finished outside the top 10 just once, and that was at Bristol, where he crossed the finish line in 12th.
