Carolina at the NFL Combine: No Quarterbacks Worthy Enough for No. 1
Filed under: Panthers, NFC South
It’s make or break time for those players who want to be Carolina’s top choice in the draft. The NFL Combine will get underway this week with the glare on quarterbacks, as usual. Here are some players the Panthers are not going to pick: Missouri’s Blaine Gabbert, Washington’s Jake Locker and Auburn’s Cam Newton.
They are not No. 1 material.
Gabbert was a spread quarterback at Missouri and Carolina just looks like a team with a pro-set attitude with its new coach, Ron Rivera. He wants to hunt a big-time tight end and a quarterback who gets under center.
Locker was too erratic at Washington. He is a wonderful athlete, fast as heck, tough, and with a big arm. But when I kept watching him in the bowl game with Nebraska he just couldn’t fit a pass in there. Locker was 5 of 16 for 56 yards.
How do you even justify picking a guy in the first three rounds with a performance like that? You can say all you want about the players around Locker, but at some point you are supposed to show some extraordinary talent.
As for Cam Newton, my objections are long and shared by many around the NFL. There were texts circulating through the NFL the night of Auburn’s win over Oregon with messages such as, “Is this a guy I want leading my team” or “I don’t project him into our league.”
Carolina will step up with the first pick and take LSU’s Patrick Peterson, Alabama’s Marcell Dareus, Clemson’s Da’Quan Bowers or Auburn’s Nick Fairley.
The Panthers’ choice at quarterback is going to spend another year at Stanford. Who knows, Andrew Luck might be there for them again next spring.
Panthers’ NFL Draft Options Pose Extremely Tough Question at No. 1
Filed under: Panthers, NFC South
There are some things to consider before this next NFL draft when it comes to the Panthers.
Here they are in a nutshell:
o. Nick Fairley was already high on the charts, then suddenly catapulted to No. 1 on some draft boards. He is being touted as the No. 1 pick for the Panthers.
Be careful.
Talking to NFL people, Oregon does not have an offensive lineman who would be drafted by the NFL. Fairley abused that O-line of the Ducks.
It is still beyond me to understand why Chip Kelly kept running the ball into the middle. He was looking for the slightest crease in the Auburn defense so LaMichael James could break a run, but Fairley could not be blocked.
Now, to be fair, Fairley had his way, too, with some SEC offensive linemen, but he never looked that dominant. Carolina, unlike some draft analysts, needs to take a big breath before it drafts Fairley.
o. Marty Hurney is the Carolina Panthers GM. Jimmy Clausen is his cat. He drafted Clausen and the Notre Dame quarterback is going to get every chance to make it in the NFL.
The Panthers, as much as it makes sense, are not going to go get Kevin Kolb. What did the Redskins have to surrender for Donovan McNabb? The Redskins surrendered the 37th overall pick in the 2010 draft, plus a third or fourth round pick in the 2011 draft.
Here is the other thing about the Panthers. They could be a lousy team next year and be right back at the top of the draft.
Andrew Luck still might be available to them.
o. Carolina has to draft for offense. The logical pick is A.J. Green.
However, the Panthers have some pieces on defense and with the superior coaching of Ron Rivera, Carolina could get things done affecting the quarterback next season.
You saw the Patriots vs. Jets game. You saw the Falcons vs. Packers game. What was the big deal in those games? Making the quarterback uncomfortable.
Atlanta let Aaron Rodgers keep making plays. They couldn’t get him on the ground.
The Jets got Brady on the ground, or harassed him. New York won by a touchdown, nearly two.
Panthers Must Decide Which Way to Turn Now That Andrew Luck’s Gone
Filed under: Panthers, NFC South
Andrew Luck is staying at Stanford to get his degree and enjoy himself. He’ll be the early favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. Luck, by the way, is not going to pass up a $50 million signing bonus because a rookie salary cap will be set up along with the new agreement between players and owners.
So what should we expect from the Carolina Panthers with the first overall pick? Have some fun and throw out scenarios along with me.
You and I are at a safe distance from actually having to make a call on this. The onus is on the ex-sportswriter Marty Hurney, the GM of the Panthers, and his talent scouts.
The Panthers will not trade a first-round pick to the Eagles for Kevin Kolb, but might they trade a pick somewhere down the line for Vince Young?
There is a lot of time to sort through scenarios and find a decent veteran quarterback. The Panthers were so sure Matt Moore was going to be their guy after his fast finish in 2009, did they really look at a lot of options after Jake Delhomme left?
Now that Luck has taken himself out of the picture, Carolina has time to look and see.
Andrew Luck Playing His Cards Right?
Is Andrew Luck really the next Bernie Kosar? Is Luck trying to gin up the draft so he can be a package with Jim Harbaugh in Miami or San Francisco?
Just asking. This is real world sports and I’m not sure of all the ins and outs of the supplemental draft, but it is best to not be caught be surprise.
Is this all transparent? Can Luck go in a supplemental draft? Is there going to be a supplemental draft?
