Sidelined by Injury, Rangers’ Adrian Beltre Focused on Rings

Adrian BeltreSURPRISE, Ariz. — It’s been a dozen years that Adrian Beltre has been a major leaguer, and for the most part they’ve been good ones.

When he went looking for a job this winter, however, the Gold Glove-winning third baseman looked to address the deficiencies he saw in his career. He’s only been to the postseason once, with the Dodgers in 2004, and that, he says, has to change.

Small wonder then that he opted to connect with the Texas Rangers, the defending American League champions. The Rangers went to the World Series in 2010, and Beltre says it’s his belief they are in excellent position to get there again.

“There were other ways I could have gone,” said Beltre, who considered signing with Angels or A’s in order to stay close to his Southern California home. “I’ve accomplished a lot in my career but this team gives me a chance to get to the World Series.

“I’ve been in the big leagues 12 years and only played in the playoffs once. That doesn’t sit well with me. I don’t have a ring, and I want one.”

Ron Washington Ready for Rangers ‘to Be the Hunted’ in AL West

Ron WashingtonRon Washington has experienced just about every situation imaginable in baseball during his career as a player, coach and manager dating back to his signing with the Kansas City Royals back in 1970.

Come Thursday’s first day of workouts for the Texas Rangers in Surprise, Ariz., however, a new experience awaits.

Washington, manager of the American League champions, is at the head of a team that is the favorite to repeat in the AL West and one of the league’s prime contenders for the World Series.

“It’s nice to be the hunted for once and not always having to be the hunter,” Washington told FanHouse Monday morning from the airport in New Orleans before boarding his flight to Phoenix.

Adrian Beltre an All-Around Improvement for Rangers

The Rangers may have missed out on retaining ace hurler Cliff Lee, but they bounced back in a big way, signing Adrian Beltre to a six-year deal. FanHouse TV’s Steve Phillips thinks it helps Texas in every aspect of the game, but it’s what it does to the rest of the AL West that makes this move so good. Click to watch:

Adrian Beltre Officially Joins Rangers

Adrian Beltre and the Rangers finalized a six-year contract Wednesday, with the third baseman joining the defending American League champions on a deal that could be worth nearly $100 million.

Beltre, paid $10 million by the Red Sox last season, could make $96 million over the life of his new contract. According to The Associated Press, the Rangers can void the final year of his contract (2016, worth $16 million) if Beltre fails to reach 1,200 total plate appearances in 2014-15 or 600 plate appearances in 2015.

The 13-year veteran will provide a boost to the offense and defense in Texas, with incumbent third baseman Michael Young agreeing to move to designated hitter to accommodate the signing.

“It means a lot,” Beltre said at a press conference of Young’s willingness to vacate third base. “I have huge respect for Michael. It means a lot he put the team first.”

Angels Fiddle as AL West Turns

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim still have a decent team, hefty revenues and Mike Sciosica as their manager. A full season from 2010 part-timers Kendry Morales and Dan Haren represents built-in improvement for 2011, when the Angels will try to rebound from their first losing season (80-82) since 2003. West Coast Bias isn’t counting out the Halos.

Yet, it’s been one stinker of an offseason for them so far.

The Rangers and Athletics, who finished one-two in the American League West last year, seemingly have improved themselves, while the Angels have yet to address an offense whose 4.2 runs per game was the franchise’s lowest since 1992.

The Angels, perhaps in part through their own doing, took a fist to the jaw a month ago when left fielder Carl Crawford signed instead with the Boston Red Sox. Crawford seemed an ideal fit for Anaheim.

Tuesday brought another setback: Third baseman Adrian Beltre, probably the only high-impact ballplayer left on the market, reportedly agreed to terms with the rival Rangers.

Adrian Beltre, Rangers Reportedly Close to 6-Year Deal

Adrian BeltreThe Texas Rangers are close to finalizing a six-year deal with free-agent third baseman Adrian Beltre, according to a report by Yahoo! Sports.

The deal, worth up to $96 million, according to MLB.com, and voidable in the sixth year, is expected to be complete on Wednesday, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Beltre, according to the Telegram, was expected in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on Tuesday night to take a physical.

That length and those dollar figures grant credence to reports that began to trickle out of Beltre’s native Dominican Republic on Sunday that he was set to sign with the reigning AL champions.

Exactly a year ago, Beltre finalized a one-year deal with the Red Sox to re-establish his value, and that’s exactly what the 31-year-old did.

He hit .321 with 28 homers and 102 RBI for Boston in 2010 and also led the American League in doubles with 49. That type of offensive production coupled with his universally well regarded glovework at third base made him one of the Red Sox’ most valuable players, especially in a season in which many of their stars battled injuries.

Michael Young Willing to Move to DH

The Rangers appear to have solved one problem with the potential acquisition of third baseman Adrian Beltre as a free agent, and the latest Tuesday morning is that the team and Beltre are close on a six-year deal, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Michael Young, the team’s current third baseman, said on Monday night that he is willing to move to designated hitter to accommodate Beltre’s arrival in Arlington. Rumors of a Beltre deal have been buzzing with growing intensity over the last few days, although different outlets have different opinions about just how close to completion the deal actually is at this point in time.

Young has experience switching positions. He moved from second base to shortstop after the Rangers dealt Alex Rodriguez in 2004 and then switched to third when Elvis Andrus came up from the minors in 2009. He didn’t love making the latter move and doesn’t sound thrilled about this one, but he’s willing to take another one for the team.

Adrian Beltre Buzz Heats Up; Source Says ‘No Deal’ With Rangers Yet

Adrian BeltreBaseball‘s de facto Christmas break is over, which means it’s time for the final loose ends of the offseason to be tied up before players and coaches head to spring training in Arizona and Florida. One of the bigger free agents still on the market is third baseman Adrian Beltre, and three AL West clubs — the A’s, Angels and Rangers — have been linked strongly to him over the course of the winter.

Lately, most of the buzz has surrounded Texas, with reports out of Beltre’s native Dominican Republic and a subsequent one by ESPNDeportes.com Sunday indicating he was close to an agreement with the Rangers, possibly for six years and in excess of $90 million.

A major league source told FanHouse’s Ed Price that there was “no deal” between the two sides on Sunday night, but that does not mean they haven’t had discussions.

Angels Reportedly Front-Runners for Adrian Beltre

With every passing day, it seems clearer and clearer that Adrian Beltre and the Angels belong with one another.

A week ago, news broke that the Angels were pulling their offer to Beltre off the table. That move came with the caveat that they were still interested in signing Beltre, but they weren’t interested in being played against other teams, real or imagined, for his services. It looked like a smart move then and it looks even smarter now.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Angels remain at the top of the list of Beltre suitors. The A’s, who were an early mover for Beltre’s services, have walked away after having several offers refused by the third baseman and his agent Scott Boras. The Rangers would like to sign Beltre, but the cost is prohibitive and the fact that they’d need to deal Michael Young or move him to designated hitter isn’t sitting all that well with them.

A’s Out of Adrian Beltre Pursuit; Focus Turns to Angels

Adrian Beltre Scott BorasThe A’s reportedly have pulled out of the running for free agent Adrian Beltre, leaving the Angels as the clear favorite to sign the third baseman.

Oakland opened the Beltre bidding early in the offseason with a reported five-year, $64 million offer that obviously didn’t cut it with Beltre and his agent, Scott Boras, and improved that offer at least, once, according to FOXSports.com. But the A’s, who also were rejected by Beltre last winter, apparently have decided to move on.

The Angels seemed a likely fit for Beltre all along and now it’s difficult to imagine another serious suitor for the 31-year-old All-Star, who is aiming high after a stellar 2010 season on a one-year deal in Boston.

Owner Arte Moreno has had his issues with Boras in the past, most notably during the Mark Teixeira negotiations, but the Angels have to do something this winter after losing out on top target Carl Crawford — whose contract with the Red Sox was labeled “crazy” by Moreno.
