Colts’ WR Anthony Gonzalez Confused Over Role Entering Season

INDIANAPOLIS – It may be Sunday before Anthony Gonzalez learns what he wants to learn. And until then, he said he prefers to not say too much.

Gonzalez, a wide receiver and the Indianapolis Colts‘ first-round selection in the 2007 NFL Draft, indicated strongly on Monday that he isn’t thrilled with what he believes his role may be at the start of the season.

But he declined to get heavy into specifics.

“Until Sunday,” Gonzalez said Monday. “I don’t think it’s worth speculating. I have an idea of what it’s going to be.”

Gonzalez, who began last season as the team’s starting outside receiver, sustained what turned out to be a season-ending knee injury in the first half of the team’s regular-season opener last season. He returned this past offseason, and said at the time he had been told he would get a chance to compete for that starting position again.

“What I wanted and what I was promised was an opportunity to compete for a job,” he said.

When pressed Monday on whether or not he had been given that chance, Gonzalez became less specific.

“I don’t know,” he said. “All I wanted was what was promised to me. I’m not sure either way that it did. I’m probably not the person to ask, really. Whether a job is open or competition takes place, is something that is determined by coaches, not players.”
