Video: Jeff Overton’s Amazing Birdie Putt

Filed under:

The U.S. Ryder Cup squad got off to a slow start in the opening action in Wales, falling behind early to a European team loaded with talent.

But that changed in the last group of the early session, as Ryder Cup rookies Jeff Overton and Bubba Watson took the first hole against Luke Donald and Padraig Harrington when Overton holed an improbable putt from well off the green.

It was an interesting choice for Overton to use the putter, given the battering of rain the course has taken and the difficulty in reading such soggy greens. But the rookie proved his worth, giving the U.S. its first lead of the day and starting the pair’s first Ryder Cup action with some excitement.

Watch the amazing putt below:

Oklahoma State Rallies Late to Thwart Texas A&M

STILLWATER, Okla. — The series between Texas A&M and Oklahoma State has been anything but predictable in recent years.

The two Big 12 South foes kept it going late Thursday night with OSU holding on for a wild 38-35 league-opening win that wasn’t decided until place-kicker Dan Bailey‘s 40-yard field goal went through the uprights as time expired at Boone Pickens Stadium.

“It was intense,” said Bailey. “It’s one of those moments you practice for, and you jut approach it like it is any other kick and just put it through the uprights.”

Bailey’s game-winning field goal capped a night in which the Cowboys scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to rally from a 14-point halftime deficit only to allow A&M to score 14 straight late in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 35-35 with 2:54 remaining.

But the Cowboys were able to capitalize on Texas A&M quarterback Jerrod Johnson‘s fourth interception (his fifth turnover of the night) in the waning seconds of the game. Three plays after true freshman linebacker Shaun Lewis picked off Johnson with 16 seconds left, Bailey booted the game-winning field goal.

Padres Sinking Fast After Another Feeble Loss to Cubs

SAN DIEGO — Good thing that the San Diego Padres play their home games a home run from the Pacific Ocean, as their once buoyant playoff bid is going glug, glug, glug.

With their hitters again swinging as if standing on the nearby ocean floor, the Padres lost 1-0 to the Chicago Cubs on Thursday, ending a four-game series that also began with a 1-0 defeat.

San Diego’s playoff chances that were so bright five weeks ago, when the team led the National League West by 6 1/2 games, are all but irretrievably lost thanks to a 12-22 swoon fueled largely by offensive futility.

“Our pitching’s done everything possible,” said Adrian Gonzalez, the team’s best hitter. “We should be celebrating right now — but we haven’t hit. Plain and simple, we’ve got to hit.”

The Padres have three game left in San Francisco, where they are 5-1 this year but must face a Giants club that has won its last four games and is three games ahead.

Absent a Padres sweep, the Giants will win the National League West.

In the wild-card race, the Padres are two games behind the Atlanta Braves, who draw the NL East champion Phillies in the final three games. The Phils will rest two of their aces and perhaps other frontliners.

“We’re not done,” said Padres manager Bud Black, who was semi-delirious after watching his hitters.

The Aggies and Cowboys both came into their Big 12 opener undefeated, but OSU left with a 4-0 overall record and 1-0 league mark, while A&M dropped to 3-1 and 0-1.

Jose Bautista Homers Twice for 54 as Blue Jays Pound Liriano, Twins

Filed under:

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jose Bautista hit home runs No. 53 and 54, including a grand slam, and the Toronto Blue Jays went deep six times in a 13-2 victory over the stumbling Minnesota Twins on Thursday night.

Edwin Encarnacion hit two homers and Jose Molina and Travis Snider added long balls for the big-swinging Blue Jays, who have hit 253 homers this season, the fourth-highest total in baseball history.

Bautista’s second homer went to right field, his first this season that didn’t go to either left or left-center.

Francisco Liriano (14-10) gave up five runs and six hits, including three of those homers, with six strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings in his final start before the playoffs. The left-hander is scheduled to start Game 1 of the ALDS on Wednesday at Target Field.

The AL Central champions have lost six of their last seven games and missed a chance to tie the Rays and Yankees for the best record in the American League.

Josh Hamilton Will Start Friday for Texas; David Murphy on Hold

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton will return to the lineup Friday night for the AL West champions, while outfielder David Murphy will be held out until the playoffs.

Murphy has a strained left groin, although an MRI shows no tear. Manager Ron Washington says Murphy will be held out of the four-game series against the Los Angeles Angels that will wrap up the regular season, and he should be ready to play next week.

Hamilton’s been out since breaking two ribs Sept. 4 while crashing into an outfield wall making a catch at Minnesota. He’s scheduled to play six innings in the outfield Friday night. Plans are for him to be designated hitter Saturday and play the outfield again Sunday.

Giants Turn to Matt Cain Against Padres With Playoffs in Reach

SAN FRANCISCO — As Matt Cain sat in the chair in front of his locker following Thursday afternoon’s game, he seemed stunned that a group of reporters were making their way toward him. After all, he hadn’t even pitched.

He was merely the next day’s starter.

Of course, as Cain is about to learn, this time of year the next day’s starter looms large at all times. And on Friday night, when Cain takes the ball, he will have a chance to do something no Giants pitcher has done in seven years — pitch the team into the postseason.

Hence, the questions. Cain didn’t have much in the way of answers, though.

“I gotta pitch, it’s the same thing as always,” Cain said. “I have to go and do the same thing that I’ve done the previous starts and take it into tomorrow.”

Mariners Shut Down Felix Hernandez

Felix Hernandez won’t get another chance to state his case for the Cy Young Award. The Mariners announced Thursday that their ace won’t pitch again in 2010.

The 24-year-old already has logged 249 2/3 innings, a career high and the most by any AL pitcher this season. Roy Halladay leads the majors with 250 2/3 innings. Hernandez has thrown 11 more innings than he did last season, so he isn’t in what is generally considered a danger zone for a year-to-year increase, but the Mariners thought it best to have their franchise player save some bullets.

“It’s tough, because you know how competitive he is,” Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik told reporters. “He wants to pitch. He’s earned a right to pitch, but I asked him to respect our decision. He has to understand it’s in his long-term best interests and the organization’s best interests.

“The chances of anything happening are minimal. We realize that. He’s been so phenomenal the last two years. But when you look at the innings last year, the innings this year, and realize he’s No. 1 in innings pitched. … By not pitching Sunday, he’ll still be No. 1 in the league. It’s a decision in his long-term best interest, and that’s at the forefront here.”
